Just know, though, that I grew it years ago, on its own roots. It bloomed more than it grew, remaining "stumpy." The problem was, when we quit spraying, it commenced to rust. It rusted worse than any rose we've ever had. New leaves were solid rust by the time they opened completely. So it went bye-bye.

THIS plant was a gift, and it was budded onto Fortuniana. Whole different story! It still blooms generously, but it GROWS. Most importantly, to be Biblical . . .
"It rusteth not. Neither doth it mildew."

So, it's a wonderful thing in the garden.

Beautiful! Is your Eugene even more purple in person? I just got an Arthur de Sansal that photographs similar to the color of Eugene above, a bit lighter, but in person it's really purple. The camera on my phone doesn't get the color right. There may be settings to adjust, but I haven't looked for them yet.

The variations are natural, but red/purple are notoriously difficult to photograph accurately. It can make 'ya crazy.
The bloom color in my image above is almost dead nuts accurate -- and this color is what I see most of the time ... but it is occasionally quite a bit redder.

Those color changes are amazing, aren't they?

When I see that Arthur de Sansal bloom from the side at distance, it looks dark smoky red. As I get closer and look at it head on, the color shifts to purple. So it's no wonder the camera doesn't know what to do.
