If Your Laundry Room Has a Door, Do You Keep it Open?

I've always kept mine closed but we remodeled it recently and we're trying it with no door. DH said he can make a cased opening if I wanted. Not sure if the noise is going to bother me or not but the LR is just too pretty to close off now. Yes, he can hang the door and just keep it open but I've got more room, in what's already a small room, without the door.

Depends. Mine is a combo mudroom/laundry room, so if I'm not doing laundry I keep it open, since constantly going in and out. If the laundry is going, I sometimes close it to block the noise, sometimes don't - just depends. I tend to close the door at night, too -- blocks some of the coldness coming in from the garage/outside wall of the room. I don't think I would like no door -- let's face it, machines and laundry baskets don't make for that attractive of a room. Especially if have company over -- I'd feel weird knowing they have view of my laundry room. But's maybe that's just me LOL!

I would not give up the door to our laundry room, for any reason. Ours is a dedicated laundry room that is accessed from the 'family room'/den. I generally leave it open for air circulation, but it is nice to close it when I want to, like when we have people over to the house, or if a load in the dryer is being noisy.

Mine is a land-locked dedicated laundry room. Just wide enough for a w/d and deep enough for a water heater too. The door has been removed for a couple of weeks now. I asked my husband if, so far, it's bothered him. He said no. I prefer the more quiet option but I not as much as I enjoy seeing my new glammed up laundry room. It would be a ashamed to close it AND I have more room with it gone. If I had company over, the first thing they'd want to see is the laundry room LOL

It's still up in the air. We'll live with it for a while more before making a decision.

Mine is “ glammed” up as well, so when not in use I like to have it open. When machines are running or the room is full of heaping laundry baskets I prefer to close the door. I need the door as I don’t want to see the mess and hear the whirring. Luckily there is space for the door.

There is resale to consider, too.

We built our home 39 years ago. Doubled the size of it 20 years ago. We're 61 and 62. We'll die here and whoever inherits the house can deal with selling it :) We've remodeled and decorated and painted this house for us, not for resale. I know not everyone can do that tho. BTW, if we keep the door off, we won't throw it away. My husband will properly store it somewhere in the shop. So far we're both ok with no door.

ajrlittle, I would LOVE to see a picture of another "glammed" up laundry room! What gave you the idea to do it? Mine started with a new washer and dryer. They looked so sad in that old outdated room that hadn't been given any love since the day it was built. The rest of the house has gotten remodels over the years but not the LR. I knew it needed to be painted and I started looking for a large piece of art for the wall behind the w/d. Then decided to have fun with glitter and found the Rustoleum Iridescent Glitter paint in quarts. The light fixture was just a bulb screwed into a motion detector thingy. Nice appliances, pretty pitbulls (g) and glitter all called for a chandy. And a glammed LR was born! A Lutron dimmer adds ambiance :)

We close the door when we have guests or don't want to hear the noise.

Our LR is at the front of our house accessed by a short hall between the foyer and the garage. There is an alcove that houses a Grandfather clock just before you step into the room. The LR has a door but it is never closed, even when guests are here. I don't like the look of so many closed doors, and it has a window in the room, so it stays open. Even when the machines are running, there is enough distance from the main living area it is not a problem.

I leave the door open. Laundry room also is where a litterbox is set up.

My room is a pass through to the garage but it's also where the cat litter box is. The door always stays open. Seems to be a popular combination, laundry and litter!

I live in dry and dusty New Mexico. I keep the laundry room door closed to keep out the dust. I leave the door ajar when actually using the washer and dryer. I would definitely want a door on any laundry room.

We still have the door off. I asked my husband yesterday if he wanted it back on. He said he's ok with it off. The way the house if laid out it will look like a planned cased opening when/if we decide to keep it off and redo the door frame. The laundry room is just too pretty (and we keep the chandelier dimmed way down at night) to close it off so I hope after living with it like this for 3-4 months we can make a decision to make a cased opening.

I leave the door open all the time. Maybe if i ever get around to getting glass in the door than maybe.

What a nice laundry room! If I had listened to my mom when we built our home (at 21 and 22), I could have a sink, cabs and a place to fold clothes. But now that I've glammed it up, I'm MUCHO happier and look forward to doing laundry. My granddaughter was here last night and I pulled out all the clothes in her bag to wash them LOL Sometimes I just stand in there and look at the sparkly walls :)

Thank you. Yours is beautiful also. I love glam with sparkles. We make do with the space we have. I had my washer/dryer in a closet for 22 years. That laundry room was a 5x9 bathroom that we converted to that. It’s not the dream huge laundry room I had envisioned but I love it. I love seeing everyone’s laundry spaces and reading about favorite detergents.

Mine is in the basement. Used to have a set of outward opening double doors. The opening was crudely cased & the inside of the room wasn't finished. Laundry room is barely larger than a reach in closet. I removed the doors, cased the opening properly, finished the walls and trimmed out with trim on the casing & baseboard. The opening is slightly smaller than original. The doors just got in the way, complicating doing laundry in a very small space. So what I now have is basically a laundry alcove.

We're still living with our door OFF of the laundry room. It's just a regular door that swings in but it's remarkable how much room my tiny 5x6 laundry room has now. DH is just waiting on word from me to either hang the door (don't want to) or case the opening...but I don't want to not be able to have the option to rehang the door. I think with a little of the trim paint, we can make it look pretty darn good. That's what we'll do. Now DH gets to find a place to store the door and get it out of the den :)
