Hachiya persimmon seedling

I ate a hoshigaki last year which had a couple of seeds. They germinated and were kept in a 1-gallon pot until this past December when I managed to find them a spot in the garden. They were only 4-5 inches tall and had lost their few leaves with the cold weather. Adding to the injury the rabbits (I surmise) quickly nibbled off the tips when I was naïve to think the garden is safe place so they sat forlorn until a month ago when little green nubs emerged. This one is a leader but I had to replant them into gopher cages below and a wire cloche on top in anticipation of the pesky marauders to revisit in the spring so the seedlings had to go through another trauma. Hopefully this is the last for now.

I'm told it'll be another 3-5 years before fruits can be expected... With the the current stay-at-home recommendations this past month, 3-5 years sound like an eternity... I guess one of the leading lesson to take to heart as a gardener is p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e!
