Look like male cones.

what are these on ?

Microbiota decussata.. No flamboyant cones for this one,

I’m really not sure if they’re male or female cones. I assumed they were female, but that’s not based on much at all. Has anyone tried to grow it from seed?

Most likely male cones bc from pictures I've seen, the seed cones are further in on the branches and a bit larger bearing only one seed per cone.

Maackia, do you have an Pinus bungeana growing there yet?

I've done some reading on this plant, and I think you're right about them being pollen cones. An interesting factoid about this plant is the female cones usually produce only one seed. It is normally produced in the nursery trade by cuttings.

No. I've tried it a couple of times with no success. It's unlikely I'll try it again. I often see it listed as z4 hardy, but I've never actually seen one of any size in a true z4 garden. Pines generally do very well here, but this one (and P. aristata) have proven to be difficult for me. Now that I think about it, success with Bosnian Pine has also been elusive.

No point in me trying any then. I can kill stuff that's supposed to grow here. ;-)

You probably will have the tiniest seed cones for a conifer though, even the very small cones on a Thuja o. will yeild 2-4 viable seeds and from pictures of M. decussata, the cone itself is smaller than T.o..
