Thoughts on Pinus strobus 'Pendula'?

I recently pulled a Picea pungens 'Glauca Slenderina Pendula' due to health issues and exploring what I might replace it with. I'm thinking about using the white pine, but its variability & size could be a liability for this site. However, I do like the idea of something unusual for this space. I don't think it will outgrow the space in my lifetime, but the thought of planting something knowing someone else will likely have to deal with it in the not-too-distant future doesn't sit well. What are your thoughts or experiences with it?

and how long might that be??? .. i figured your about 20 ... hmmm???... lol ...

it can be just about as aggressive as any strobus .... how fast do they grow for you ... in your area?? .. it would probably slow down in part shade ...

it has to be trained to the height you want/can ... and thereafter.. its all downhill ... creating quite a skirt ... hence how much space do you have ...

My neighbor has 2 that he tends to ( trims , trains )

they been there for long time ( 10 or more

left untouched they could be 12/15 ft

its the one dead center in back.. right ... ???

dont get me wrong ... if you like fooling with your plants ... its a fun plant.. that grows fast enough that you can play with it ... and you are covered in pine tar after .... and frankly.. that always flashes me back to xmas trees ...

pruning would have to be timed for proper regrowth that you could train ...

I wish! Hopefully I have twenty years...give or take...

I checked out the link you provided and the P. s. 'Pendula' at Bickelhaupt is a monster! With any luck I'll get to see it this summer, assuming the ACS national meeting isn't cancelled. Is this what they mean by cancel culture? ;)

Ron, that's quite a specimen your neighbor has. I think to make it work here I'd also have to engage in "training," which I'm not very good at. BTW, is that a Bristlecone Pine in front of what looks like a Nootka Cypress?

    I remember your Slenderina...
Damn shame, I thought it was impressive.

    ACS meeting was cancelled. :-(

I have three of these. They get big, sure, but they are very easy to prune. I have two of them making arches, one over a path. If you like the look but want a smaller, narrower tree, try 'Angel Falls'.

I’m sorry to hear it has been cancelled. The ACS had put together a nice program and I was looking forward to it. Hopefully it will be held at Bickelhaupt next year.

Angel Falls does seem to be more uniform and narrower than Pendula, and it probably makes more sense for this site. Still, I have to admit the variability of Pendula is intriguing. BTW, I had to laugh when I read you have three Pendulas having remembered Michael Dirr’s comment about it (...one is acceptable, two represent bad taste, and three disgrace). He’s one of the more opinionated garden authors, which I kind of like, but that comment seemed dismissive and condescending.
