Rats, mice, voles leave ragged edges. Plants eaten by deer are distinguished by a rough “ripped” look because deer do not have teeth on the upper front portion of their jaw. Deer have flat molars on their top and bottom jaws and incisors on the bottom front jaw only. Therefore, deer pinch stems between their lower teeth and their upper palate, and tear off the leaves or stems.
