My wife and I have been talking about maybe replacing it with something else. Are the roots anything to be concerned about down the road? At our old house, we had a box elder root hit the sewer lateral and flood the basement so we are a bit scarred.

As long as any inground plumbing or the house foundation is structurally sound, the roots are not a concern.

Looks like a perfectly healthy little tree. I'm not sure I'd be in any hurry to replace it. If you do decide to do so, here is an extension service publication that offers a lot of choices.

Maple trees are notorious for having roots run along the surface of the ground. My whole street was lined with maples many years ago and the lawns around the trees are an absolute mess. OTOH you're probably good for a lot years before it becomes a real issue.

Personally, I'd replace it with something else, but maybe I'm biased. You could just keep making the mulch area larger and larger and let someone else worry about it in 30 years. :O)
