First candidate phytophthora root rot, sections of foliage collapsing like this is characteristic of that. Also I would look into honey fungus, see if that might fit the bill.

I wouldn't rule out Verticillium wilt either. Viburnums are very susceptible and the pathogen is pretty prevalent in our area.

I dug around the root area and don’t see anything out of the ordinary. It may have been too wet. It borders our driveway on a slope and water may course through that slope of the driveway. We are taking it down today. My dirty secret is that I never liked it much anyway...just tolerated. There is an Amelanchier alnifolia next to it which will love having it gone..

BTW - it seems like I have lost quite a few things this past season. It was quite a wet year for us and attrition may just be catching up to my 30 year old garden.

Yes: in your picture it looks like the shrub has root rot.

You'll probably read this afterward but otherwise be mindful of the irritant hairs that cover this plant during the removal operation. Including ones that will come loose and float in the air.
