a fire everything sooted want to replace all contents - insurance

Our house caught on fire one room actually burnt all the soot from smoke and fire cover everything. Kitchen fully replaced, because the soot had gone through cabinets and everything. walls replaced floors will be refinished all wood. No carpets, the books and papers even at the farthest location in the house have same amount of soot causing removal of all the appliances and furniture. Yet they want us to keep clothing old furniture, artificial wood, books, kitchen cookware. The clothes located the closest to the asbestos field in the next room. Anyone had this situation and having to deal with the insurance company to get anything for the stuff we won't keep? We are willing to take less then what we could get if we listed everything. Its for our health not the money. Sure would be grateful for some advice or experience.

Agree, speaking from personal experience, hire the best public adjuster you can find.

A public adjuster perhaps, but sad truth is nobody really reads or understands their insurance UNTIL they have a fire. Clothing, outerwear, shoes, unless it can be bleached is a total loss. Kitchen cookware is NOT a loss. It needs a full soak and scrub. Same with dinnerware, flat wear , glasses. Soot, smoke odor, unless pervading wood and fibers, will wash off and the smell will go with it. You WILL need a scrub brush.

We had a cleaner that specializes in fire restoration speak at our local landlord’s association. They said they CAN clean clothing very satisfactorily by putting it into a vehicle that is equipped to clean fabrics. I have no idea what they actually do. I’d call a fire restoration company and talk to them.

Agree with millworkman and mdln. Your insurance co is an expert at reducing claims to the absolute minimum, that's what they do. They are not your friend and they aren't going to voluntarily pay in accordance with your insurance policy. A public adjuster knows the ins and outs and how to get what you are actually entitled to according to your policy. Find a good one in your area.

We had a fire and yes, they took all the clothing, blankets, towels, etc and cleaned them. Even the yards and yards of fabric I had. They said they would pay me to wash them, but I said no.

Everything plastic had to go. All curtain rods had to go (can't clean the insides).

If had to do over, I would have used my own adjuster.

thanks so much for all your comments. Its like we are in a traumatic time with two row of sharks one insurance the other is the contractors in charge of rebuilding you home. We are still in wait and on our 3rd property manager. They sent a chemical testing company to the place where our things were "cleaned" by contractor we hired. Because I complained and didn't want the things exposed to the content.

    Much Aloha,
