It is far more dead than alive. I wouldn't waste any time on it. It is not going to recover.

i think i still see tags on it ...when was it planted.. who planted it.. how was it planted ... and how did you care for it after planting ..

i would be curious about a pic at soil level.. and of the whole tree .. im wondering about planting issues ...

this MI boy doesnt know sunset zones .. so i presume you are in CA .. which i also dont understand.... lol ... or at least west coast ...

Sunset zone 24 is coastal Southern California, from around Malibu south to San Diego. Not an ideal climate for JM's but better than most of SoCal. My sister had a couple in her Laguna Beach garden but they took work to keep happy.

When you do replace, pick a spot that receives at least some shade in the afternoons. While some cultivars will tolerate a full sun position, that is not an ideal siting in any climate and especially the further south one moves

Thanks so much to you all. Knew I was pushing it as to location. Ken, it’s a year old from Armstrong . They have a guarantee that will replace it, but I won’t go that route, especially in these hard times.....And, expecting it was likely my fault. :(

Update: only holding out a tiny hope, but it’s getting more leaves..Its a “ trompenberg”.
