Reseeds madly in this area! Which is why it is now considered a 'Weed of Concern' in King County and on the state's noxious weed list as a 'Monitor' species.

Individual leaves are a bit unorthodox but otherwise presumably that is what it is. A bird coming to the grape plant probably left the laurel as compensation.

Thanks to everyone for the speedy ID and thoughts. Given what it is, the growth characteristics, and the location, I need to remove it.

I live surrounded by a greenbelt and in a neighborhood with many laurel hedges. It is dead common to see these laurel seedlings (and English holly) popping up here and there in the greenbelts. I pull 'em when I encounter them but an endless task to get them all. Same with Daphne laureola. Birds are great planters but they don't pay any attention to restrictions with invasive species :-)
