• Replace the shutters with a wider trim around the windows.
• Instead of fishscales, take a look at the combination of shingles and board and batten on the house below.
• Fix the position of the vent at the top of your home so that it's centered.
• You may want to duplicate the gable bracket over the front door at the top of your home gable.

Fishscale, cedar shingles would all work. I would remove the shutters and not replace. The trim around the windows seems to be wide enough. You could add an additional piece of trim on the top of each window. The house has a very tall profile so I agree with leaving the trim piece dividing the first and second floors. You could do white and a color or two colors but use different tones of the same color (e.g. lighter gray, darker gray).
