There has to be two wires going from the switch location to the fan/light (one for each) AND the fan/light itself has to have two circuits. You seem to have only two (one of the blacks is probably the source wire).

Yep, ditto mtvhike, looks your light circuit is wired for only one fixture. Going to the light, you would need a black, a red, and a white wire (and ground wire) in order to use your double switch. Your current options are to have an electrician replace the 2-wire cable going up to the light with a 3-wire cable, or use some electronic switch/controls to work with the existing 2-wire circuit.

If you get a new fan/light fixture with electronic controls, then your existing single switch will turn the assembly on and off, and the remote will control brightness, and speed and direction of the fan.

I recommend you let someone that know's how wire it for you. This is clearly one of those "if you don't already know you shouldn't ask" situations.

Nobody is going to be able to do what the poster is asking. MTVHike has the best answer. Even if the fan doesn't have a remote currently, often there are retrofits available.

There are some remotes that mount like a switch but provide independent controls. Others, you leave the switch alone and you have a device that looks like a small TV remote.

Remote control fans are subject to interference. This thread is all about that.

Fan remote systems (mostly the receiver) also have limited lifespans, in my experience.

A hard-contact switch is more reliable. But it's more expensive to install, because as stated above, you have to replace the electrical cable from the wall box to the fan box. That's usually not a trivial job.
