Coastal My Living Room

last modified: 5 years ago

Major struggle alert! Moved in to our home two months ago and I’m struggling to give our living room the coastal appeal I desire. Working with what we have what can I do to turn this space into the coastal oasis to reckon with? FYI I just ordered a new area rug to go with the curtains. Under the covers is a black sofa and a beige loveseat. Thanks

8 x 10 [is that your size now?] -- this is gold, fuschia, blue, geometric, but take a look. :)

heres the orange rug you like in the dining room and a round rug

Am I still looking for seat covers? Even with rug? If so what color?

I'd say wait on seat covers until after you get rug.

Yes, and also you should be able to cover those type of chairs pads fairly easily without using a bought cover. You usually can 'pop' the sit pad and then it's a matter of stapling your fabric to the back.

Many tutorials online if you are unsure.

Hey everyone. Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Thinking about my kitchen and painting the cabinets and adding a backsplash. Given how the dining room still looks since the last update would black or white cabinets work? What are your thoughts and ideas

I’ve since put the microwave on the counter on the right btw.

the cabinets look fine to me, the issue to me is storage. I would invest in some cabinetry like what was discussed above before painting. you could try different cabinet hardware for a refresh or perhaps a new countertop?

    Hi Mallorie,

I also think your cabinets looks nice as they are, but if you were to paint them, definitely white!

Painting is expensive to have done correctly and incredibly time consuming and laborious to do it yourself. I think they look nice as is. How about just changing the hardware to something in brushed nickel that makes more of a statement? You could also stain some crown molding to match and add it to the top to give them a more finished look, change your recessed light to a pretty pendant light, add a valance in a fun fabric, and change your range hood out for a white one to match your appliances.

I would have done contact paper for the cabinets. In case I didn’t like it. Definitely intend to change the hardware. Can I still add a backsplash? If so what color? And intend to change the light also. I thought about blinds for that window. Should do valence instead? And got it about the range hood. Pic of my inspiration below

IMO i wouldnt add a backsplash with current countertop that has the 4in or so backsplash. if you remove the countertop or the existing 4in backsplash then yes in could see a backsplash. what r u thinking for the countertop? staying or going?

Contact paper just won't hold up. Wood is actually coming back into style. I agree about not adding a backsplash with the 4" one you already have integrated into the countertop. You could do blinds, roman shade, or a valance-whatever works for you. Just something to soften the window a bit.

Hmmmm countertop would stay. I’ll work on the blinds.

    So.... I’ve been busy busy

OMG, you have been very very busy. WOW, such a change for sure

I love it. It shocks me every time I walk in the room lol

yeah!!! so glad you love it!

Wow! Did you paint them? It looks so nice and bright!

Yes I did. The cabinets at least. I love it

Ladies, I have another project I’d love your opinions and expertise on. I made a separate post called Disney my bathroom. Would love to hear what you think! You all have blessed me so much. Thank you!

Hey all. Hope everyone is doing well and safe during covid. Providing an update. Made some changes to the living room. I’ll put a before an after pic. We knocked down a half wall and have so much more space in the room. So I’m thinking of extending the dining area a bit. Thoughts? Probably a long dining table?

I still plan to go extend the curtains to the wall and just have all solid white curtains.

you are such a busy bee... what a great idea to take down that wall. more breathing room for sure. will need to remove the chair rail in the dining area, which i am assuming you are doing... your question about extending the dining room... can you take a pic of the entire room, maybe from the patio door in the living room looking into the dining room. how many feet do you have now between the chair in the dining room to the sofa? will want to make sure there is some space between the two, like 3.5ft to 4ft just so the dining and living aren't too close to keep the breathing room

I just get excited. And I just can’t hide it!!!
Good to see you Theresa. The space from the chair to the sofa was about 7ft. Pics coming. Please excuse the mess

Cause storage is important. Would the bench extend all the way to the wall. How long would it be?

Keep the round table we have or get a different one?

how far is it from the sliding door in the dining room to the half wall you just removed? it may be able to go that long? you could maybe make the two ends like this pic below.. see how the ends are more cabinetry with the middle the bench seating? I like the round table you have personally, is it enough room for your needs? does it have an extension that you can use when needed? I think you could feasibly get stock cabinets for the ends and then add the bench in between?

Definitely think we could feasibly get the cabinets and bench in the middle. As for the table it only seats four and does not extend. But I will double check on that. Would be nice to have room for maybe two more. And will measure the distance or the door to wall shortly

Would it also work if I got a tall black cabinet in the back corner near the door, and black chairs (I really want these for easier to clean purposes) and kept the table?

if you need seating for six, perhaps an oval table. will need to measure the length of the wall and determine length of bench area vs cabinets. to me, bench will offer efficient seating from a space perspective. bench with say 4 chairs around an oval table, again will need to measure wall to see what length table.

Distance from door to wall is 12 ft

if you have a 78in wide oval table, you will have 5.5 feet left to play with. maybe tape the oval shape out on the floor to see how it feels and add room for chairs. would also tape out the bench/cabinetry depth to see how it feels.

While you're deciding -- I see the chaise, but would you also like a small swivel chair?

These lines seem like lines in your chairs, you can keep a few and also add banquette/ bench.

So update. The round table is gone. Here’s the table and chairs now

looks good, looks like there is plenty of room too.. what made you decide on black? is the idea of a bench and cabinets out or are you still working it?

Still working on it. And I chose black for the sake of spills and stains. It was stressed out when something spilled on the rug and chairs and the stain wouldn’t come out. So for presentation sake chose black.

Hey all. So much as changed. We are moving soon to a hopefully better space. They are coming to take pictures of the place on Saturday. Any advice on how I can rearrange this room and make it look decent with the items I have? Thank you

All the art is already packed away and don’t want to put it back up.

Oh wow, it seems like you just moved into this place.  How exciting.  Keep the space minimized as you have it.  I would actually remove the TV too and just stage as a sitting room.  When in doubt, remove.  You want it to be non personal.

Theresa!! Good to hear from you. Yes. We’ve only been here almost two years but it’s time to get something else. I just moved some things around. And unfortunately we don’t have anywhere to move the tv or id use that advice.
