Will my Kwanzan recover?

I have been melancholy about the state of my 2 year old cherry kwanzan. I purchased it for Mother’s day in 2018 and it bloomed beautifully those first two years with watering and fertilizing. This year however, when it began to bloom, I believe some frosty days “shocked” it and burnt the bulbs. I haven’t fertilized it yet, as I was waiting to see if the bulbs would probably bloom again. I’ve checked it nearly every day, and we noticed a crack at the base which exposes bark which looks in very good condition.


I did accidentally break one of the small branches thinking it was dead and the inside was surprisingly green and hydrated. The branches do look dry and and bit tough, but I cannot say for certain all hope is lost.


I just discovered this tree is not long lived, and very sad as it was a gift for my mother. Is all hope lost? Should I replace it with something else instead? I’m in Illinois. Any and all insight appreciated!

    Probably it is dead. If you plant a replacement tree there give it a mulched, grass free area at least 2 ft. across - it looks like the bark has been eaten away from the bottom of the existing tree. Perhaps by a string trimmer, if not animals.

    Which means the replacement tree may need to be given a wire enclosure, to keep animals away until it is begin enough to get by without one.
