Electrical Plan Review

We just got back our electrical plan from our architect. My husband and I are going to sit down and review it tonight. We would love to hear some feedback- what are we missing, do we have enough, etc. This is our first renovation. Thanks!

This link will probably give you a better resolution.

I think the number of lights in the living room is great actually. Ours is smaller and we have same number on a dimmer.

Master bath the light switch for the closet is in a weird spot.

Dining switch very hard to access

Exterior lights need to be more central, near front door, can have multiple switches but having one by garage and one by front door seems odd.

None of our bedrooms have cans. All have a light overhead and lamps. Do you specifically want so much light on bedrooms?

Good points A S. Now that I think about it we don’t have cans in any bedrooms except the master in our current house.

Also think about where you might want furniture to be and where you would need a plug. Bedrooms, for example could use more plugs for either side of beds.

In living room do you want a floor plug? We didn’t put one in and I regret it as our space is fully open concept and we are now limited in where a lamp can go

Thanks David... we do need to add flood lights and nightstand plugs too.

Think about adding USB ports to some outlets, especially ones near nightstands.

I'd want several receptacles in the garage, including one in the ceiling for the garage door opener. There should also be one close to the A/C condenser. Have you thought about seasonal (i.e. Christmas) lighting and where you'd want to plug it in? How about a pole light in the front yard and security lighting in the eaves? The garage lighting is minimal. I'd plan for a workbench that would need task lighting.

Not electrical, but I find a laundry tub to be very useful.

Cans are a very personal opinion of course. They are generally regarded as task lighting so make sense in a kitchen (and IMO only a kitchen). Well - I do like them in a shower.

Cans in a ranch maybe a large energy loss depending on the design of your attic. Something to consider. The leakage and lack of insulation can be significant.

Cans are nice for cleaning but it looks like you will have plenty of sunlight in your master for cleaning. Otherwise, what task are you doing in a bedroom that needs that much light? You could certainly clean at night. Otherwise, I think they are put in as a high end thing to do and then left alone.. Had in my last master and not in this one (both custom builds).

The dining room light switches would be better on the left side, near the kitchen and foyer.

The master bath has a lot of lights, do you really need one over the tub? If I’m soaking, I don’t want light shining down on my eyes.

In the bedroom halls, consider at least one solatube (with integrated light) in each hall. Otherwise you may find yourself turning on lights just to walk down the hall.

Also consider solatubes for the internal bathroom (it can have an integrated fan), the mud room, and the laundry.

Not electrical, but have you considered how you will use the garage storeroom? It seems very narrow. I can’t imagine getting in there to do more than hang a few brooms on the right-hand wall.
