Tom, i just check what you wrote. Oh dear ! I have no idea where this bug came from. I only have roses here. Well, i have knock it off and hopefully a kids umbrella will catch it. Drop it in a bucket of soapy water . Guess, i have to remove some soil too just to play safe. N spray with rubbing alcohol just in case.

Hate those things! They drop off and fly to the ground and hide when disturbed.

I crush every one I can get my hands on - bonus if you catch 2 that are mating!

And yes, knocking them into a container of soapy water is good way to remove a lot, and make sure they stay in there until they're good and dead.

I didnt know they fly too. Yeah, the fall off easily n i have to dig the soil to grab them. They are hard like armor on them .

I guess they must have flown into my yard. I was curious as how they even got here. That makes sense.

Weevils in general as well as many beatles pupate in the ground beneath the host plants. They develop as white grubs. The Little Leaf Notch Weevil is the same, see the link I found to the page for this pest on the University of Florida Website.

When I took over the management of the roses at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens a couple of years ago, we had a bad infestation of Rose Curculio Weevils in one bed. I decided to try nematodes last spring and that almost completely solved the problem. The page for this weevil suggests nematodes as an eradication strategy as well. You should be able to buy them at a good garden center, Green Earth was the brand I used. Follow the directions for timing, temperature, etc. on the label. They are safe and only attack beatle and weevil grubs (white grubs), not other beneficial insects. They are used for things like Japanese Beatle and lawn grubs as well. If properly applied they work well.

If conditions and timing are not right for application of nematodes, you may have to wait until fall and then reaply in early spring; and deal with the adults in the interum . You may wish to talk to a pest management specialist at either your Agriculture Department, or at a reputable garden centre about this. I think it is worth a try anyway. Good luck.

Neither neemoil or soap and water will get rid of the Shri Lanka weevil. And it is definitely the Shri Lanka. IT is NOT native... and there is NOT any native predators. You can purchase some kind of neematodes that will have some effect on the larva.... but you will probably have to use an insecticide if you want to kill them. They will eat several plants and can really devistate your garden. The larva will also eat the roots of plants and can eventually kill a plant. The will also feast on citrus, lychee, hibiscus etc....

Spraying is not effective, but drowning them in soap and water does work.

Beautiful roses. I can understand how you must be mortified to see the bushes being eaten by this beetle.

I have a question, why wouldn't a systemic insecticide work? I know it's a drastic choice, but normally anything that eats the leaves and/or roots of plant that has been treated dies.

Some of the insecticides that kill regular chewing insects do not work on this nasty pest. Not sure if the insect has become resistant or what.... Things that are recommended are dinotefuran and Acephate according to USF

May I just comment that your roses are taking my breath away!

Wish I could help ya with the weevil, sorry. Hopefully, your persistent killing of the adults will stop them from creating a next generation.
