Good News About Izzi

This week I took Izzi back for a six month check up. Izzi is over 12 years old and became diabetic. She was put on insulin for dogs and a very strict diet. Over time she has been losing weight and the vet has kept lowering her insulin. Recently she has been on 3 units of insulin twice a day. My vet called yesterday and said to lower her insulin to one unit twice a day and to bring Izzi back in for another test in two weeks and she may lower that to one unit once a day or even no insulin. Just keep her on her diet. She did even up her canned dog food to a half cup twice a day. Izzi now weighs ten pounds. Have you had a pet that was able to get off of insulin?

I'm glad to read that Izzi is doing so well.

My neighbor had a diabetic cat that was able to go off of insulin after his diet was changed. Once the disease was under control, the cat lived a good long life.

Way to go, Izzi. I am so happy the treatment is working for your sweet Izzi.

I don't have any experience with a pet on insulin, though. Sure hope she

gets better and better and it stays level for her.

good job!! my son has a diabetic cat and her insulin was recently reduced after losing a little weight. hope izzi continues to improve!

Is Izzi now at a good weight -- 10 lbs.? How obese was she? How long have you been working on her weight loss?

A friend of ours thought nothing of cooking half a pound of bacon (along with sausages and eggs) for his "Full English" breakfast. He became diabetic in his 60's. After dieting, he was able to stop all insulin. (Adding: *He* was cooking all that because his wife refused to enable him! It still took the diabetes diagnosis to make him change.)

I think Izzi was around six pounds overweight. It was about a year ago we had her diagnosed as diabetic. I knew what was wrong before I took her though, with all the pee everywhere! Even if she can't go to one dose a day, having her insulin this low is great. Not having to give it to her would be really great.
