Are they suited for your location? It could be that late spring frosts/freezes are damaging or destroying any flowers or flower buds. You might need to look at later flowering varieties.

Fruit trees take a lot of time to start producing fruit. They develop their root systems before they begin fruiting.

The size of the tree makes a difference. For the most part the smaller the tree the faster they start fruiting A dwarf tree will produce the earliest. A tree on a full size rootstock is one of the last, except perhaps for a tree on its own roots. As in a rooted cutting. Also trees grown from seed are said to take 10 years to fruit; but your named varieties are not likely grown from seed.

There are also differences in fruiting times based on the variety. A Rome or Cox's Orange Pippin will produce very early. An apple like Baldwin takes forever.

Damage to the tree will set it back, My McIntosh and my Redfield were both browsed twice last year by deer. The Redfield is an early producing apple and mine flowered the first spring after planting, but this year it didn't flower.

Another thing to consider is that a potted tree is much older, usually, than a bare root 18" tall whip.

And if you graft a cutting to an appropriate mature tree, the cutting will produce faster as it can take advantage of the mature root system.

I would guess that next year you'll have better luck.

Are you pruning them at all? And if so when? Or fertilising? Growing branches 'like crazy' sounds like excessive vigour. Any chance of pictures?

What rootstock and how old? My trees on standard rootstock took 7 years plus to flower. bare root semi-dwarf in my MN Zone 4B took 4 or 5 years or more.
