I was going to also suggest looking at a Lacanche if you cannot find an O'Keefe & Merritt online. I would use these discussion pages to search for Ilve and Hallman as the Ilve is now produced by Hallman.

How about a 30" range, the most popular, with the most features, and the best performance for the price. Then you'd have 10" to work with instead of 4". The oven in the (just an example) LG LSG4515 is downright massive compared to that Ilve one.

We had an old 38" (plus change) 1950s GE range and got a Lacanche Volnay which is basically the same size

. We've been very happy with it and I'd definitely recommend it, even though it is a splurge.

I had the same issue at our place. The house we bought had a 60 year old 40" range that needed a replacement - it was not in great shape at all. I managed to find a second hand Lacanche range, a unicorn!, that was 20 years old and still in phenomenal condition (photos from it newly installed at our place and when we picked it up), also a Volnay. It's incredible how well the enamel (not one scratch!) and all the parts have held up in 20 years! I LOVE it. We have a gas oven and the bake is so even on it (because it doesn't cycle like a newer gas range - the burners simmer). There's not a lot to break on these ovens, because they're fairly analog, so I expect mine to still be going strong in another 20 years. I think next house I would absolutely be willing to splurge on another Lacanche, for both quality and longevity. Plus, I have visited their show room in Seattle and they are wonderful people to deal with - totally down to earth and super helpful. Incidentally, The 40" Lacanche is actually 100cm, I believe, which translates closer to 39.37 inches... not a full 40". Depending on how tight the old fit was, you may already have enough room.
