I should also add that I have led lighting though out that's dimmable and can have the color temperature adjusted from 2700k to 5000k.

My choice would be BM Chantilly Lace, BM Oxford White or BM Simply White. Chantilly Lace is the whitest.

I really like Chantilly Lace also as it's the most "modern" looking of the ones I've narrowed it down to. However, at night it seems like it'll be a little to stark. Its frustrating that all these colors take turns shining and falling flat depending on the time of day.

At this point I'm stumped, do I want a warm white or a cool white?

What color are the kitchen cabinets, doors and trim?

@Lori A. Sawaya I forgot to address that the cabinets, doors and trim are going to be repainted white but the white depends on what I go with for wall color. If I do Chantilly, Oxford, or Pure White walls I'll do trim, door and cabinets in the same color but a higher gloss sheen. If I decide on Simply White for walls I'd do SW Extra White for trim, doors and cabinets. I dislike off white trim.

First, true Scandinavian Design includes the use of a lot of color. Denmark averages less than 2 hours of daylight per day in December. This white with neutrals is an American idea.

Second, you state that your home does not get a lot of natural daylight.

Please understand that for the photo-receptors in your eyes to see white you need light.

If you don't have enough light you will not see white - you will see gray, (Step inside a closet that is painted white - close the door - what do you see?)

I suggest you paint the room with the least amount of natural daylight white on white and see if you like the end result. before committing to painting the whole house white on white.

Simply White is not less white than Extra White - it is actually a lighter (whiter) color than Extra White. Extra White is bluer than Simply White. Simply White is more yellow then Extra White.

When testing whites you should not be comparing all of these side by side - it is messing with your brain and causing confusion. You will only be using one of the whites, not all of them together. Our brains don't process color independently - we process color holistically.

If you are talking you may not hear what is going on around you - your ears still pick up the same information, but your brain prioritizes the information. Same thing happens with color.

You are not looking at the whites against your belongings - your brain is comparing the whites to each other in conjunction with your belongings and this can lead to bad color decisions.

Simply White will act like a white on your walls and is perfect for both walls, trim and ceiling. If you use Extra White on the trim and ceiling you may see the blue/gray in the Extra White or the yellow in the Simply White.

There are a lot of things that can complicate selecting a white. Understanding how we perceive white can help clear some of the confusion.

IMO the lighting needs to be decided before choosing any color for walls. I find LEDs in 4000K are a good mimic for daylight and tend to have very little effect on color in the evening.

Forgot to add, Some colors of white cross brands better than others.

You need to get Simply White and Extra White in their respective brands. If you go with Simply White walls and Extra White trim/doors/cabinets, do PPG's Delicate White on the ceiling.

It's okay to get Delicate White mixed at SW, their color match is pretty.

We did white dove and I love it. We painted over wood paneling, here is a picture.

Jennifer Svensson - You are so right - I said daylight when I meant Sunshine - Cloudy/overcast/dark vs bright and sunny.

We have a lower level family room that gets very little natural light, and we went with white dove on everything. Eggshell on walls, flat on ceiling, and semi-gloss on trim. I love it. Never feels cold or stark, not too warm either. It's really perfect.

However, a local painter swears by Ben Moore Advance for trim and cabinets. I've seen his work with Ben Moore Advance and it's phenomenal. If I were to go with a Ben Moore white instead of SW Extra White for trim and cabinets what Ben Moore white would you recommend with Simply White walls? Would Chantilly Lace work? Thanks for your help so far, I was tearing my hair out trying to narrow down these colors.

I went nuts last year with this as well. What type of exposure do you have? We have northern exposure yet big windows so still get some light, along with light white oak floors. We ended up with Oxford White since we didn’t want anything too stark and LOVE it

Take a look at White OC-151. It's pretty.

Advance is a gorgeous final finish. Letting the painter choose the product is the smart thing to do.

Why not use Simply White for the trim and cabinets too? It will save you tearing your hair out.

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC I saw a house in person with Simply White walls, trim and cabinets. I love it as a wall color, it's stunning. However I didn't care for it as a trim. It's got too much "color" to it if that makes sense. I've always preferred crisp white cabinetry and trim regardless of the actual wall color, especially since my decor is a more modern look.

I understand, Mark, if that's how you see it. Color is very personal. I'd try Lori's suggestion.

I haven’t read any of the responses, but from your chips of paint I like White dove for the walls and Chantilly for the trim. However, until you get a largish sample on your walls you will not k ow what any of the colors will look like in your house and indeed they may look completely different from room to room. My recommendation is to paint a half size poster board in each color and take them from room to room to see how they look with your ceiling height and fenestration.

You mentioned that you are leaning toward Ben Moore Simply White as your wall color. That’s a great choice! It’s a soft, warm, creamy white and it will go great with your floors. It should also help make the rooms feel cozier during those cold Wisconsin winters.

Agree with Diana Bier. Paint the same white on walls, trim, cabinets. My DD did this with BM White Dove in her home. My DIL did this idea using BM Simply White in her home. Looks great, clean, opens up the space. They used semi gloss on the trim & cabinets. A different sheen for the walls...flat, matte or eggshell.

I've read the post and all the comments.....so Mark? what did you do and do you have any photos to share? My open concept is all Simply White, but after 9 years of it I want to try something else. Also want to paint the kitchen cabinets, I've used Advance and it's fabulous. So if you read this would you post what you did in the end? please?
