Redoing cabinets after counters

Is it possible to get new cabinets 1-3 years after new counters? We weren't planning on spending the $$ now on cabinets, but I am worried replacing them later will ruin the counters. Our MSI quartz mishap is being replaced with granite in the next couple weeks. If we have to do it now we will, but just don't want to spend the money if we don't have to.

Yes, there is the probability that your counters will break when they are removed, while they are being stored or when they attempt to reinstall them. If they break the installer will have no responsibility and you will have to pay to replace.

Do you love the layout? If you decide to change the layout then the counters would most likely no longer fit the space.

What is the quality of your current cabinets? If they aren't great quality, then it doesn't make any sense to put new counters on old cabinets.

What about appliances? Are they old too?

You need to look at the project as one, and not as small pieces that you can randomly change.

Granite counters can be lifted, but it is expensive and risky to do so. Any countertop should be shaped to the existing cabinetry. With the slowdowns and backups related to the pandemic, you would be looking at a 12-week lead time minimum from most cabinet manufacturers right now, longer once you add in time to configure your plan and place the order. You could put IKEA in quickly if that appealed to you.

As others have said, look at the project as a whole -- what is your final goal?

Major infrastructure items should be done first -- those things that cannot easily be done later. In the Kitchen, that primarily includes floors (but not until the cabinets are also replaced) and cabinets. All other items can be easily replaced after the cabinets and floors are done, but not before.

If the cabinets will eventually be replaced, do not replace the counters now with anything expensive or that you would want to keep. The likelihood of them surviving a later remodel are slim. Instead, either stick with what you have or, if they're no longer usable (and that sounds like your situation), replace them with something inexpensive and that you wouldn't be upset when you get rid of them later. Can you get your money back (assuming you've already paid for the quartz or granite)?

I would do as little as possible now and put the money toward the larger remodel later.

Thanks for the feedback. Ugh we just did not need this expense right now! I'm fine with the layout, but just want new ones. The only things I think we would modify would possibly be this lazy susan cabinet that I hate and the drawers need to be bigger. I want my upper cabinets deeper, but that won't impact the counters. I hear decent things about ikea cabinets, but also that we have to assemble & install them. I also want a navy island and I doubt we can get an island from there.

Are there places that have more affordable cabinets that are of good quality? Home Depot? Lowes? Our house was built in 2011, but they are builder grade cabinets (Aristokraft) and the previous owners did not take good care of anything.

I don't see why you couldn't buy cabinets to build an island from IKEA? But yes, you're putting the cart before the horse. It would be best to figure out what you want at the end.
