The Faun! i keep forgetting I want that one! It's great to hear it does well in NY as well as CA. It's perfection in that pot. I'm looking through my pics to see what I have. This year many are new and since I'm crazy for New Dawn I may have to sneak some in since she's almost an antique and my actual specimens were planted soon after her introduction. I think it's nice to know how long-lived a rose can be.

...seriously good roses from you Chris, as always.... I wish I had some to share without showing older ones, but mine are between flushes.. just to satisfy my curiosity, what's the tree in the 3rd photo in the background, looks to be covered in white flowers?..

The Faun is such a cute rose. It really seems to like the pot. It has struggled with me in the perennial border because it gets so easily out competed by neighboring plants, but now finally seems to be thriving.

Thanks Marlorena. That's a Kousa Dogwood. Was here when we bought the house and really puts on a show. Produces lots of fruit in the fall too although not sure how much it appeals to wildlife. Most seems to fall to the ground.

Only one Austin in bloom at the moment, the lovely Munstead Wood. It turned vibrant, glowing magenta in the recent heat:

And then of course is Bolero, which is always in bloom. It is not an Austin, but it is a grandchild of Sharifa Asma:

This is a rose I found locally that I believe is the rose going around as Charles Lawson. Once blooming and incredibly healthy and vigorous. Very fragrant too.

Today I was astonished by the scent of my first bloom ever on my band of ‘Souvenir de St Anne’s’. So powerful and so delicious, like pure, sweet, powdery cloves. The bees love it and so do I!

And Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil is always a reliable and extremely fragrant beauty:

Chris, I wondered if your rambler be Excelsa, then I looked at Helpmefind and see there is a lot of confusing between Excelsa and Crimson Rambler (which I had never heard of till now. Whatever it is, it's wonderfully vigorous. I'm always impressed when I see these roses nearly naturalized, withstanding deer and complete neglect.

I bought six off-patent Austin roses from Palatine last December. I'm most impressed by this one, English Garden (AUSbuff). I hope it survives our winters.

That is beautiful. I know Freedom Gardens sells it, but I never realized it was so gorgeous. I wonder if it has Buff Beauty in its heritage?

Chris, I'm glad you posted that picture of Darlow's Enigma. It is a quiet dependable rose for fragrance and bloom here. It's so quiet, I kind of forget about it, but it is in the background of many of my garden spots, perfuming the air.

Just a note on the crimson rambler above: 'Crimson Rambler' is very easy to identify because of the profusion of bristles on the pedicels: they look like orangutan arms. Also 'Crimson Rambler' is slightly maroon rather than crimson. So the ID for that red rose above is probably the Walsh rose 'Excelsa.'
