Early Bolt or Normal?

My husband and I have put together a garden for the 1st time. So far all our little crops have done well. but I'm concerned with my broccoli. Is this normal? I planted from seed probably right around 05/10. and advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to find anything about it except possible that it's already bolting...

I'm not sure what that is exactly, but that is not normal "broccoli". Do you have the name of what you planted?

Whatever it is, it is normal for it to bolt in the summer heat. So it growing well, you just don't know what you are growing.

The leaves look more like broccoli raab than traditional broccoli. Go ahead and harvest the entire plant. With broccoli raab the leaves as well as the little heads are eaten. It'll be more bitter than broccoli.

It is a weed in the same family with Broccoli (Mustard or Cabbage family). You have Broccoli visible behind it in the first picture,

Planting broccoli from seed on May 5th is problematic depending on your location and local climate. For example, here in Va my zone 7 planting window is starting seed in early Feb indoors or buying transplants in mid march to put outside at that time. Broccoli prefers cooler weather and matures into pickable heads around mid May here. If you live up in Canada your timing may be right but normally broccoli transplants can handle some light frost and upper 20's better than the heat of summer.

I agree with windberry above, the plant in the background looks more like broccoli than the one which is blooming.

we're in Ohio. I'm sure we probably started too late. last frost is right around mothers day. we planted the seeds about a week after.

It’s a goner, I’m afraid. Just eat it.

Would consider it a weed, probably is edible, you can try it if you feel like trying it. Pull it up and plant something else. Did you get any more plants like this one?

Broccoli does decent in Ohio heat, it will grow during summer and you can eat it into November, so don't give up on broccoli.

Rbrt I planted seeds in 6 spots in the bed for it 4 of them have bolted 2 have barely grown and the 4 that bolted grew quick and fast and were amazing looking until they bolted. We havent given up just yet, but may try seeding indoors next year. Our spinach, beets, peas, carrots and potatoes had all done incredible. I did look them up on Ferry Morse again to be sure and someone else had the same problem with the bolting that we did. just got them started to late is all

thanks for all the input everyone we really appreciate it

Just to be clear, those bolting plants are not even close to regular broccoli, maybe they sold you mislabeled seed.

Looks like a brassica, but not broccoli.

It’s certainly a Brassica, no question. But I don’t think it’s weed. It could be a kale. But there are all sorts of leafy Brassicas. All are edible if not necessarily palatable. But whether this is a weed or a crop plant it needs to be used or removed. It’s bolted and will deteriorate from now on. Indeed it’s already begun.
