I agree with your goal -- white trim is so unexciting. The example you used is gorgeous, and I support that choice. Try gray taupes, and buy samples before you commit to a color. Use the garage doors as your test palette. A rusty red door would be gorgeous.

SOme of the paint cos have online paint visualisers (Benjamin Moore, Pittsburgh), and although you won't always find a house similar enough, you can play with the color scheme about how dark or what tone and where color should go.

I have never understood putting huge garage doors at the front of the house which take up a third to a half of the design. Whatever you can do to minimize the garage would make the rest stand out.

I'd trim back the shrubbery and introduce some color.

I think that taupe color will make the garage doors less prominent but still add interest to your overall house. All of the white window trim, roof trim, door trim and garage doors should be painted out. Your gutters and downspouts should be painted as well.
I love that red front door. I think it adds a beautiful, eye catching detail.

I wonder, if you painted out all the white for a deep taupe and did a red front door, could the shudders just stay black? It would be a pretty crisp color palette overall.

The sample trim color you choose is correct for your home. I would remove the shutters from the two double windows, they are too narrow and wouldn't cover the windows if closed which is the purpose of shutters. The window above the bay needs wider shutters, perhaps made of wood. The garage window can have similar wider shutters or no shutters. I would either stain the shutters or match the new trim color. The door should be your focal point. Question can the window sash trim be painted also? With these simple changes you are going to have a very sophisticated look.

Consider new window treatments as they make your windows look flat, they need to recede.
