48 inch dual fuel range advice: monogram vs wolf vs thermador?

last modified: 6 years ago

My wife and I are planning our kitchen renovation and looking for advice on 48 inch Dual fuel ranges. After back and forth about 36 inch range plus wall oven we settled on the 48 inch range for both design and space reasons. We’ve narrowed our options to the dual fuel monogram, thermador, and wolf. Monogram was presented to us as the best value choice (I know relative given the price). There’s a significant price jump between the monogram and the other two so wanted to see how people’s recent impressions were as the monogram threads are pretty old. My wife likes baking so oven performance in this respect is important. While price is a factor, if the monogram doesn’t hold up well in comparison we would bite the bullet and go with one of the others. Also, interested in the specific concerns about wolf besides blue chipping and thermador. Thanks

Look at Blue Star and forget the dual fuel. it’s fraught with issues, and is a gimmick. If you want an electric oven, then add one, with a plain 36” range. You’ll have the best of both worlds then, with the proper ergonomics required to operate them.

I have the 48" Wolf dual fuel. I have no complaints, but it was designed/bought to fit a large kitchen/house and not for the way we cook. We tend to mostly grill meat/fish outside and eat steamed or roasted vegetables. I also have a Miele CSO (convection steam oven) XXL and I use that all the time. We aren't big bakers, but like to have the ability to cook/bake for larger gatherings several times per year. For a smaller house I would do a 36" gas or induction range and a Miele CSO. This gives you a versatile CSO for everyday use and a bigger oven for special occasions.

Are there any opinions on the 48 inch dual fuel monogram range? We understand that the 36 inch range plus a wall oven is more versatile for cooking, but my wife prefers the 48 inch range in our design plans...

    cysurvivor,

I had the whole Monogram line in the kitchen at my last house which was built in 2007.

My range was 48" inch, dual fuel, with 6 burners and a griddle. I really liked the range, never had a single issue with it, and I would own another one. However, not the same story for the microwave and built-in refrigerator. The microwave was the absolute worst, it was always breaking down, we ended up having a spare microwave since it occurred so frequently. As for the refrigerator, the coils iced up frequently and we had multiple service calls for it as well.

cysurvivor, we are in the same situation as you were five months ago. What did you decide on and are you happy with it?

I am currently in the same situation between Thermador and Monogram

Currently considering dual fuel 48” Monogram, Wolf, or Thermador. i like the higher number of btu burners on the monogram and i think the ovens are marginally bigger. Also the Monogram is about $2000 less than the wolf and $1000 less than Thermador. Also i can get a free Drawer Microwave with the purchase, a savings of $1,700.

While I have looked at these on paper looking for personl experience with any them. Your input would be appreciated.

    @cysurvivor what did you choose?

Following this thread. I can not make up my mind as to brand. I know I want a 48 inch range but my brain is having a hard time justifying 14k for a stove. Help.

Can only comment on the monogram cooktop; we bought 36” with four burners and the grills that flip to accommodate a wok; with the griddle; had it for 9 years prior to moving. LOVED it. Am getting another for the house we’re building now. Also getting double ovens; feeling Meh about Monograms-on our last ones, the self-clean feature didn’t work.

We purchased a Thermador 48” Dual Fuel range with 6 burners and an induction unit and double oven. Model PRD486WIGU. originally wanted a Wolf, but was told it was going to be about 9 to 12 months. Contractor suggested Airport Appliance who said they could get Thermador in 4 months which at the time would accomodate our remodel schedule. Turned out Thermador took 9 to 12 months, depending on the appliance, to deliver all appliances. Rude Thermador Customer service, hours wait to talk to someone, required 100% payment upon order. had our $25,000 whole time. Airport Appliance not much better. Lied about delivery times and deposit amount. Have had 3 service calls on range in first 6 months with burner issues. In my previous home we had a 48” Thermador cook top which we were pleased with which also influenced our decision to go with Thermador again, but never again! I dont recommend Airport Appliance either. Good luck however you decide.

    cysurvivor,

Which range did you end up going with and are you happy with your choice?

I went with the Thermador. This decision was based on the delivery date of 12/21 to coincide with our remodel. I believe that Thermador and Airport Appliance were both complicit in providing inaccurate availbility information. Appliances we not available until the end 7/22. Had I known this I would have bought the Wolf since this was the time frame Wolf was quoting.

We had numerous issues with the Thermador range. Multiple burners stopped working which took months to fix due to inability to coorectly identify the problem and lack of parts availability. I actually pointed out the issue to the repairman. Also issues with 2 different electrical boards and oven door.

I would not buy Thermador again.

I got the Monogram all-gas range some 7 months ago. Terrible decision:

    1) Food spills immediately bond to the cooktop. Doesn't matter how quickly you clean it or how much elbow grease you put into scrubbing it; it's stuck forever.

    2) Both side front burners put out uneven heat around the ring. One side of the pan can be 50 degrees colder than the other. Lots of burnt food if you don't constantly rotate the pan. No amount of playing with the rings on top balance it out.

    3) Indicator lights gave out. And it takes forever to get parts shipped. This they are fixing.

Items 1 and 2 -- which make the range look ugly and make it difficult to do everyday cooking -- are not going to be fixed by Monogram even though brand new.

I would stay away from Monogram.
