In the Master bedroom, I have a ceiling fan/light combo. I find it convenient, especially when entering the room after dark, as that light switch is just to hand. It provides an overview light.

It is less used when I am reading in bed ... for that I rely on wall lighting from above the headboard.

Do what works best for you.

I can only give you my own opinion. I think ceiling lights in a bedroom or living room are not the best. I prefer a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

I don't think it's a question of being outdated, but of a bad idea from the get-go. I avoid ceiling lights in all rooms except kitchens and bathrooms, as table, floor and wall lighting gives a much more pleasing light.

Sorry but I think this is one of those areas where many decorators get carried away with "decorating" and relegate function to a secondary consideration. When you walk into a bedroom and want it lit, you need light, not mood ambiance.

As with most rooms, there are different lighting requirements at different times for bedrooms. It varies of course with the size of the room, but it can take a fair number of wall mounted fixtures to provide enough light for an adequately lit room, compared to what can be done with just one (or more, for a large room) overhead fixture(s). Because most wall and table lamps don't give off enough light covering a large enough area. The ones that do are harsh to see because they're low.

Times of lower lighting circumstances are easily covered by a mixture of floor, table and wall mounted lights.

There are many attractive non-flush ceiling fixtures available that are stylish yet don't look like chandeliers. Recessed cans can also be useful. In the end, it's a matter of personal preference but I think it's a mistake in decorating to not give function a high priority. I see it too often, especially in kitchens.
