I think Hickory cabinets look great! I would go with a countertop with less movement so that the wood and the countertop do not compete. Does the Calacata marble fx look something like the one in the picture below? For the floor, I'd go with a lighter option from your 4th picture - similar to the one in the picture below.

Mint Tile LLC - thank you for sharing that photo. Wow! Beautiful finish! I am really encouraged to see the Hickory done in a contemporary way. The cabinet maker was a bit unsure of my choice and so it’s lovely to see it done so well!

Shilpa R - Thank you for responding! Yes, I am concerned about all that movement in the laminate. It’s the one you show in your picture. With the plain white brick backsplash, what do you recommend as an alternative countertop? I had been looking at a new one they offer that looks a bit like a grey soapstone with white veining. I wasn’t sure if that would be too random or would tie the flooring in as it seems to have a grey cast.

Unfortunately the light tile on the left of the wood in the fourth picture is actually the master bath. We have to have a single floor material running throughout the house to prevent bumpy transitions for our sons in wheelchairs. Tile was thought to be too slippery as we expect (hope) that the kids can drive in and out of the house in their play and water and dirt is sure to get tracked in.

Can you think of another flooring colour option? I was looking at a knotty pine look and I see white oak is very trendy now. Just not sure they work with the Hickory.

The hickory is nice, but I think you need a very simple, solid color, countertop with those cabinets. The marble will have too much variation and will not give you the "minimalistic" look you're going for. You also have a lot of variation in your floors.

I like the countertop in the pic shared by Mint Tile LLC. Would you be open to something like that? Or how about something on the gray side like this one?

I think a soapstone look would be a good choice.

We love our hickory kitchen. We have leathered steel gray granite which is a dark gray and it’s lovely. I think a soapstone look, dark gray or black are also great.

Or white Corian would have been our other top choice. I do think it’s good to have a plainer counter with hickory. I like darker gray or black, or white as shown on the vanity above. We used the same hickory cabinetry for bathroom vanities and did the white tops.

For your floor probably a medium stained white oak look would be safe in my non expert opinion. Something like provincial or early American stain from minwax. I know you are doing lvp but if you google that maybe you could find lvp that’s similar.

roccouple I will look at those stains and see. I think you all are right. Less movement in the counter. I need to find something that will hide fine cuts and crumbs but appear more solid in colour. I’ll pop back on once I do some more searching. Thanks for your help!

Ooh, I can’t wait to see your kitchen cabinets!

We recently put in Glacier White Corian countertops. We’ve got quartersewn oak lowers and white upper cabinets and red oak hardwood floors. I love that the counters are so simple and plain, as they definitely give the eye a resting place in our kitchen.

Could you link to your backsplash? We’re in the middle of choosing backsplash (yet again...we keep picking and then changing our minds, this time due to price).

In our case, our cabinets are darker than our floors and I think that it works just fine, though I seem to remember a pro here recommending that the floors be darker than cabinets if both were wood tone. Or am I making that up?
