Yes! Mudroom with closet! Our Architect talked us into it during the design phase. Initially, I thought I didn't need a closet if I was having built-ins. The closet will house all the overflow coats, shoes, boots, winter stuff, etc....My goal is to keep my built-ins from looking like a cluttered mess and more like you see them in the photos above.

Agree with above poster. Closet storage for off season things is crucial in my laundry/mud room.

I like having a closet somewhere for off-season outerwear and sometimes shoes too. So maybe it depends on the seasons you experience. (Here we get full four seasons and need a variety of coats for three of them.)

Totally depends on where you live. I have about 20 jackets for varying seasons and activities so they all won't fit on hooks (cute not-so-warm winter stuff, fancier winter stuff, winter staying-outside-a-long-time stuff, etc). I have a huge bin of scarves and mittens that sits in the closet. I ALSO have hooks and baskets for my current go-to items. Maybe not having a closet would mean I would just get rid of everything but the essentials, but my gut tells me it would all just become less conveniently accessible.

All this to say, I wouldn't survive without a mudroom closet, but that's me.

Windbreakers, rain coats, jackets for Fall, jackets for Winter, long black wool coat for dressy evenings, scarves, gloves, garden cloggers, dressy snow boots, hiking boots—mine and his are in the mud room closet. I don’t want to go back to my closet just to go to the grocery or run out to the workshop. It keeps my real closet neater and it so convenient.

If you have the room, I'd do both.

Pros of a closet is that off season outerwear won't fade from prolonged exposure to light, both daylight and artificial, and will keep them from collecting dust, too.

mudroom is nice, too. Is a small closet +mudroom possible?

Hooks are fine for kids jackets and some adult jackets or coats, but quality outerwear should be properly hung on a sturdy hanger so they keep their shape. Having both a closet and hook racks will cover all your bases.

Thanks everyone. I will talk with my designer but it sounds like we should go for the closet if we have space (which I think that we will).
