l'll start with the easy one. Number 3 is most likely Undulata Albomarginata. A vigorous grower that is one of the most common hosta.

Now for Number 1. How tall does it grow? Did it start out more yellow/gold in the spring and then get greener? There are quite a few very similar.

I'll have to think about Number 2. Did you just take the photos? Are you going to grade me on this quiz? Maybe bkay2000 can help too.

I'm going to guess that Number 2 might be Summer Music.

Number 2 looks like one I have called Guacamole, lol.

Lois, I lost 90% of my hosta about four years ago. I'm not very good at identifying hosta that I don't own, and I have very few right now.

Theresa, if you really want to know, I'll copy the photos and post them to the hosta forum. They are beautifully grown, by the way. I think Lois is right about the last one. The second one could be Summer Music (looked it up on hostalibrary.org). I never had that one.

Char, Guacamole's colors are reversed - the center is light green and the edges are dark green. This one has a dark center and light edges.

Could #2 be Francis Williams? The name sounds familiar.

Lois, that #1 begins as that shade and doesn’t get any taller. It may get a bit wider but I separated it last year to give a piece to my daughter. And yes, I did just take the pictures, just after a rain shower.

Theresa, #2 could be Frances Williams. The ones I'm familiar with have a narrower gold margin, but some are wider like yours. One of the less desirable traits of Frances Williams is that it most often gets brown burn spots in the gold margin later in summer. Does that happen to yours? Or is it in deep shade?

#1 could be a young Sub and Substance. Under the right circumstances it can grow quite huge - 3' tall and 5' across. It has large leaves and is readily available at nurseries.

#2 is in good shade.

#2 is probably not Frances Williams. Frances Williams almost always has burned brown spots on the leaves, mostly on the edges, but also other places. #2 is really pretty, with no spots evident. So , I would say that unless the photo was taken within the first month it came up, it's not FW. Most photos in the hostalibrary.org show really nice specimens, but all the photos there of FW have brown spots. There was a new and improved version of FW that came out a few years ago that wasn't supposed have spots, named Olive Bailey Langdon. Maybe it didn't spots up north, but it had spots at my house.
