Hawthorn Tree Pruning / Cutting Rooting

I've a number of Hawthorns we've planted and, for the most part, they're growing fabulously (in fact, too much so, perhaps).

I'll get pictures later, but for now, it's a question of too much and too little.

For two of our trees (quite well established, never looked better than this year, in fact), there's a lot of interior vertical growth - should those be pruned out and when?

For another two trees, there are a mass of offsets at the base of the trunk. These trees are young, and one has had the 6' central trunk die, but the offsets are vividly healthy. The other tree that has this happening appears centrally healthy.

Thanks for your suggestions / advice.

Jeff
