Microwave Recommendations - very specific needs

I have a gigundo microwave. It is in a large pantry-type cabinet in the kitchen. I would like a smaller microwave so that I can move my Breville Smart Oven into the cabinet and get it off my countertop. I hate countertop clutter.

I need a microwave that

  1. including necessary clearances takes up less than 18” in height
  2. is lightweight
  3. has 1000 watts of power, maybe

I use microwaves for very few things, but I do not want to be without one. Here are the main uses:

  • reheating leftovers
  • popping popcorn
  • melting butter or chocolate
  • baking potatoes
  • DH cooking TV dinners (don’t judge)

I have looked online at AJ Madison, at Costco, at Walmart, and at Lowe’s. Mostly, I only got confused. It seems if I get 1000 watts, I also get a huge MW. There is something that DH cooks regularly that says it must be cooked in a MW with at least 1000 watts. I can’t remember what it is, off hand.

Can anyone recommend a MW that fits my needs? Should I refine my needs?

Since you already have a Breville smart oven , look at their microwave. Love the look and has worked great for us. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/breville-reg-quick-touch-microwave/1042543411

Looking at the one nhbaskets posted lead me down a rabbit hole that ended up at Amazon with a MW that can be controlled by Alexa. I love the answer to this question:

    Question:

Will it work with amazon 4K fire stick?

    Answer:

Yes and no. It works but it only allows TV shows about food twirling around on a glass plate. And the screen is really small!

I have Alexa. She tells DH what the weather is, she plays music, and she acts as a timer. Needless to say, we do not fully appreciate her attributes.

Star Jeep, I can’t believe I didn’t think to just google for what I wanted instead of going to various appliance websites. That one is certainly in the running.

NHbaskets, I had no idea that Breville made microwave ovens! Thanks for the tip.

bbstx I'd check the necessity of that 1000 watts just to be sure. We have a smallish GE microwave that is 13" high, 950 watts and it heats/cooks things much faster than our old much larger 1000 watt micro. Ours is used for the first three things on your list and also heating cream for my coffee in the morning. It works just fine but one thing I HATE about it is there is no option to turn off the beeping. It beeps with every push of the touch pad for time and power, beeps when it finishes and beeps if you press pause.... Had I known it couldn't be shut off I would have upgraded to one that has a no beep option even though I don't need any other fancy settings. I barely use anything other than full power. Have I mentioned I hate the beeping?

The list is getting shorter. Many of the MWs I’ve looked at need at least 12” of clearance above. The Breville only needs 8“. As currently configured, I have 36 vertical inches to work with. The Breville Smart Oven needs 6” of clearance at the top. Perhaps I ought to look at reconfiguring my cabinet shelves.

ETA: DLM, now that I’m on this quest, I’ll start paying more attention to wattage requirements. I use the MW about once a day....I reheat my cup of coffee about halfway through. Other than that, if I’m not baking, I rarely use it.

I don't think i've ever seen a MW that cannot do the things on your list. I've gone through three kitchen renos in 3 houses and each time someone tried to convince me I needed a fancy MW. Each time I spent like, idk, maybe $150 for one that was the right size and looked ok and could be hidden.

I have nothing to offer on the microwave, but try baking potatoes in the crockpot. They cone out so good! Ha! That’s your tip For the day!

    Tina, good tip!

Mtn, right! A dorm MW would probably be good enough. The only hang up is trying to find what it is that requires a high wattage MW and seeing if there are alternate instructions.

No advice about a microwave, although surely one exists to meet your specifications -- can you actually put your smart oven inside a cabinet? Seems like that may be a fire hazard?

We have this microwave and love it! It fits in an upper cabinet in our kitchen and has a very large interior. 1000 watts. Lighted interior & easy to clean. $99 at Best Buy. Have had it for a few years and gets daily use.

We do about the same with our microwave, minus the TV dinners (no judgement from me!) Have had 3yrs now. I like it a lot. Cuisinart CMW-100. 1000 watt. Roomy interior for 1 cu ft. Much quieter than our last microwave.

@rmsaustin, I called Breville yesterday to double check that the Smart oven can be put in a cabinet. It must have 4” of clearance on all sides and 6” of clearance above. As I do when using my microwave now, I’ll make sure the doors are open the entire time the oven is in use.

This is the cabinet that is under consideration. Please don’t judge. Obviously, it has become dumping ground for oddly-shaped or little-used items. If truth be told, my entire kitchen probably needs to be Kondo-Mari’d.

Bbstx I have a Frigidaire countertop mw that is 1100 watts. I also had a strict height requirement, it’s less than 13”. I think it’s discontinued but there is a replacement version

    this is mine

    This looks like new version

Almost anything that can be heated with a 1000W microwave oven can be heated with a 950W microwave oven with 5% more time. The exception might be popcorn, which depends on rapid heating of the water in the corn kernels.

Two of you have now mentioned using the Breville Smart Oven in a cabinet. Even though I’m willing to take the manufacturer’s word that it is doable, perhaps, it would be prudent to put the Smart oven where the MW is now just to see how it works before I get much farther down this road.

I like Panasonic microwaves but do not know if they have one that meets your specifications. I must be the lone ranger here because I do not have a toaster oven and just do not see me using one. Even though there are only two of us, when I cook, i cook for at least 4. We are both fine with leftovers, and until recently I would sometimes take my dad a plate the next day from our dinner. I know people will say you heat up your kitchen with a big oven, but honestly, I have never noticed our kitchen warmer when the oven is on. Maybe the ac runs more and keeps it cool. So there is the use of electricity, but I'm willing to sacrifice that LOL. I'm with you though, I don't like appliances on my countertops. I have no clue what brand microwave BBB carries - have you checked? You can always use a 20% coupon there.

Tina Marie, I was totally with you on toaster ovens. Mom always had one, so having a toaster oven just screamed “little old lady” to me. However, DD’s MIL had the Breville Smart Oven and loved it (past tense because she has now upgraded to the Breville Smart Oven that has the air fryer feature). When DD et al. lived with the in-laws while house hunting, DD got accustomed to using it often and convinced me I needed one too. And DD got one when they finally moved into their house.

I love that the Smart Oven heats up faster than the big oven. Being in the South, the a/c runs all the time anyway but I do think using the little oven keeps the kitchen marginally cooler. My kitchen has a breakfast area at one end with large double windows. It also faces due west. It can get pretty warm in the late afternoons.

BBB carries Black and Decker, Oster, Farberware, and a couple of others. I think they have discontinued carrying Breville since nhbaskets bought hers there.

Bummer! Our kitchen is the same way with the large windows in the eating nook (but doesn't face west). We all get used to what we use/do. And you mentioning your daughter made me think - how is her house coming along?

Thanks, TM, for remembering. They moved in at the end of March/first of April in a total flurry. Their town and county were going into lockdown. They finished literally minutes before the lockdown became effective. Because of that, they moved in before some things were completely finished. Even now, there are things that need tweaking.

Some things are going to look unfinished for a while. DD is teaching the twins to make up their own beds, so no decorative, cute bedding and pillows. They have only that which is necessary - sheets, coverlet, a pillow. I would love to see adorable rooms, but I think what she is doing is so much better!

Wow, mdln, according to the manual for the MW you posted, only 2” of clearance is needed above the unit. That is the tightest fit I’ve seen yet!

Another one here who has not seen the glory of toaster ovens.

When we moved into our new to us home, we hadn't noticed that there was no microwave. For the first few months, we really didn't miss it. As time went on we did. Since I knew we were going to be remodeling the kitchen, we got a small countertop one at Costco. I think it was $99. They call it an inverter microwave. Anyway, I think it does everything you want, and it was very good. It's still working but is now an extra. I don't think I can link it from Costco but this is the item.

Tina Marie, I have the Breville BOV900 Smart Oven, it heats up to 350 deg F in just under five mins. Here on the Texas Gulf Coast, hi temps, hi humidity, A/C running many, many hours of the day, total electric home, it is a welcome addition to regular size oven. At 5:30 PM it is currently 90 deg F on my shaded front porch.

bbstx, I have an older LG microwave, 1000W 11 7/16" hi, 14 15/16" deep, 20 1/16" wide. 8 years old and not too heavy for this 81 yr old gal to pick up and move, if necessary. Bound to be a newer/different model number, this one is a LMA1180ST.

New Beginning, I am in TN and just saw on the news where it is currently 97. I can totally relate. However, I have my oven on right now (homemade pizza!) and don't feel like it has warmed up my kitchen. I'm glad you like using a toaster/smart oven, it's just not for me. Hope you as well as us here in TN get a bit of a cool down soon!!

Love our GE Profile Space Maker 2

is about 15 years old, so unsure if still being made. 12” high By 24 long . Sits on a shelf and does all the things you require. I adore its simplicity. MY DD fancy mic requires more steps than this simple, inexpensive one. Hope it continues for more years.

Martinca, if that is the MW I think it is, baby that thing. They are pricey to replace. DD had a similar space in her kitchen. When the MW croaked, the only thing that would fit the space was GE MW. No others of any brand. She and I both looked. She finally ended up calling one of the upscale appliance stores in her city. They took the dimensions and said there was exactly ONE made that would work.

New-Beginning, your MW would have been perfect. It only requires 4” of clearance on top, back, and sides. Regretfully, it has been discontinued.

Update, sorta: this morning I moved the microwave to the countertop and put the Breville oven in the cabinet to test having the Breville in the cabinet. No sense buying a new MW until I know the set up will work. (That MW was heavy!)

Well, that didn’t take long. It is not going to work to put the Breville toaster oven in the cabinet. Right now the clearances are way more than the minimums. I made cheese toast for lunch, which didn’t take very long at all. Nevertheless, even with the doors open, the cabinet heated up way more than I was comfortable with.

Now I’ve got to move the heavy MW back to the shelf. UGH!

bbstx, do you have an electrical outlet inside the cabinet? They won't allow that here (code violation), but I sure wish it were possible.

    bbstx thanked cyn427 (z. 7, N. VA)

I sure am glad that building codes vary from location to location. I have a 2 gang outlet (4 plugs) inside that one kitchen cabinet; a 2 gang inside the upper half of the bathroom tower and another 2 gang inside the lower half of the tower; a single gang in the pantry; and every closet has a single gang (2 plugs) outlet, at a minimum. My brother in law jokes that if I have a plug in my hand, all I have to do is reach out and there will be an outlet there.

Outlets inside cabs and drawers are outlawed here, too.

When my son bought his house in a nearby state seven years ago, the inspector made them remove all the outlets inside the.cabinets, which was costly. Code required removing all the boxes from the cabs, then patching all the holes left behind. They had several outlets and lights installed under the cabinets so it's all good, but inside would be very nice for certain uses.

    bbstx thanked sheesh

Oh, sheesh, the outlets in the bathroom cabinets are especially useful. I had them installed so that we could leave the hairdryer plugged in and have DH’s razor and our toothbrushes charging but out of sight. The one in the kitchen was so the microwave and toaster would be off the countertop. The one in the pantry is used for recharging the handheld vac. Sometimes I set up the iron and ironing board in the closet.

The only oddity I’m aware of in our electrical code is that a kitchen island that is permanently installed must have an outlet in it. Mine has wiremold that runs just under the granite overhang on the backside, giving me six outlets!

Interesting. The Sharp "Over the Counter (OTC) microwave oven is designed to plug into an outlet that has to be in the cabinet one hangs the OTC from. I studied the residential parts of the 2014 version of NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code -- NEC) exhaustively and never noticed any prohibition on outlets in cabinets. Bathroom over-lav cabinets are sold with outlets in them -- presumably for rechargers. Surely there have to be outlets in the sink cabinet for garbage disposal and dishwasher.

I haven't as seriously rummaged through the 2017 version of the NEC, or yet bought the 2020 version, so maybe for some particular case the outlet is prohibited. They have always had to be 'accessible,' so deep in a cabinet space with narrow dimensions would be an issue. Maybe towel cabinets in a bathroom might pose a risk if the plug is not well inserted.

Nonetheless, it is within the power of Code Enforcement authorities to use a municipal or state code that differs in some respects from the NEC, so restrictions beyond those in the NEC should not be a surprise, even if they are a source of wonderment.

Yep, kaseki, as you point out, uniform laws and codes are not always uniform.

DH came up with an alternative arrangement. I’ve put the Breville oven in the corner where I kept my mixer and moved the mixer to a different part of the counter. This leaves my “baking” cabinet on the other side of the kitchen from my mixer. I think I’ll have to move my crystal stemware to the baking cabinet and the flour, sugar, etc, to the crystal cabinet. Luckily they are the same size.
