Am I crazy for painting this desk?

I am considering painting this desk unit white or cream. The reason: I'm tired of dusting it every 3 days and I want something that doesn't show dust. The wall of library shelves don't show dust like the desk does, so I'm fine with leaving them as is or painting them white. The woodwork in the rest of the house is white; this is the only room with stained wood. The unit is about 10 years old and in perfect condition. I realize it's beautiful, but white or cream would really freshen things up in this room, along with a new wall color. I realize more than 50% of folks would say NO!!!!! But I'm asking anyway. Several years ago I had our almost-40 year old Drexel bedroom furniture painted cream, and I've never regretted it for a second. I dust every few weeks in the bedroom because I do like a clean house, but the dust doesn't show when I do. I also realize that white/cream furniture may someday be "dated." Thoughts?

Hi Phenie I understand it’s difficult to paint over beautiful wood. Take into consideration though how the room makes you feel whilst you work. I think the room has too many earth tones and appears outdated. Maybe painting some parts of the furniture (off white), as well as the shelving, removing the rug, changing the wall color (a cool color), and changing out some of your knickknacks will bring a new energy to the room. Here are some ideas.

I think white or cream would look wrong in that room unless you make other changes.

I say go for it as well and I would do more of a white, but would also paint trim white.

You have the advantage of having painted your bedroom furniture cream and not regretting it, so I think you should paint this, too. In a few years, you may change your mind again and decide to paint it black or another color. This is your home, but it is also your decorating workshop, so it’s fun to experiment and try out new looks. I’d paint the woodwork, too, and the bookshelves. What a fun project!

I would place an air filter somewhere before I would paint that desk Especially since it's ATTACHED TO THE WALL UNIT. Don't sweat the small stuff............dust, jeesh.

Yes paint everything the same color so you can't tell where anything starts or finishes when you walk in. LoL

If it bothers you, go for it. I suspect you will be updating other areas of the room after you accomplish the wall unit and desk.
