I'm looking for some ideas on what to do with this basement ceiling. Images below...

This portion of the basement is a 1960s add-on to 1950s ranch. The ceiling is pretty low, and you can see the ductwork that runs perpendicular to the joists, and plumbing from the upstairs bathrooms protruding below the joists. The sewer line also runs below and perpendicular to the joists, to the main drainage pipe in the crawl space in the "old" part of the house. (Apparently there were no codes when this work was done. We refer to it as "the beer buddy's basement add-on", LOL!)

Back of the basement walks out to a patio, and there's a fireplace, so we really want to make this into a comfortable usable space.

Since this pic was taken we have done some work: moved the duct running down the length in the middle to follow the interior wall, and installed can lights. Painted the walls, floor and jacks, and taken care of the damp basement issues.

Of course we can paint the ceiling and all the components, going for that industrial look. That may be the best solution in the end, but I wanted to put it out there to see if anyone has any suggestions.

We want to be able to access the duct work and plumbing without tearing the permanent ceiling down. (Old houses always need fixing.) I've thought about something fabric-y like a boat cover with turnbuckles, and that way you can take down portions as needed. But I expect that would be fairly expensive. Putting in some kind of flush mounted drop ceiling might also work, as it would also allow modular access but I have no idea how to get that to accommodate all the stuff below the joists. And I'm not sure what to search for on the internet to gather some info on materials.
