so who knows which end gets planted? The more rounded or pointed? It would appear the pointed end down????

Usually the rounder side faces up and the pointier side down but to be safe, most caudiciforms will start sprouting without being planted in anything if you put them in a dark, dry, relatively warm place such as a drawer. Just don't forget them there. That's the only foolproof method I know.

Many caudiciforms come from grasslands with high summer rainfall but dry winter and spring and are adapted to flower and produce seeds before the summer rain gets the grass growing so they don't need roots or water to start growing
