Hi, As a start, I would remove the clock and replace it with a large piece of modern art. That clock is a very dated look. Also, you have way too many items on your shelves. Paring down those items on each shelf will give it a much cleaner, modern look.

Which one looks better?

None of those fireplace facings harmonize with your golden floors. I'm not sure why you're replacing your beautiful floors with gray floors, which are just the latest fad. You have lovely floors now. Before you make expensive changes, first make color choices that harmonize with the the floors you have--warm tones.

Your tan walls totally clash with the floors, which may be a reason you want to replace them. The current stone surround does go with the floors. See how everything looks once you repaint.

Yes, remove the clock and get a great, large art work for over the fireplace. Replace the side shelves with some golden oak shelves with just a few interesting items. Or plain white shelves.

A modern art work with some gold in it will get you the modern feeling for a lot less expense than all the stone you're looking at.

Is that a wood burning fireplace? If so, put logs in the firebox and a modern basket of logs on the hearth instead of that decorative bicycle. Little things like that make the room look dated and cluttered.

housegal200 thank you for all your advices and I truly appreciate it. The problem is the flooring is creaky and has chipped in many locations. It’s a very thin floor and makes noise when you first step on it (even though it looks nice in the picture). It is my son’s toy and is left there accidentally. And yes the clock will be gone and the shelves will be clean once I do the flooring and the fireplace.
It’s a gas fireplace.

Hi, Were you planning to repaint the room? Maybe its just the lighting in your photo but the paint color looks beige. If you are going to change the floors and fireplace surround to gray tones, then I would also repaint the walls to a more complimentary shade of off-white.

kiffkat yes I will definitely paint the walls too. I was thinking a very light grey.

Since you're planning to do a lot of changes, may I suggest that you get a color consultant to help you make wonderful color choices for your new home? This is the time to get expert advice instead of doing things piecemeal. That goes for furnishings as well. The gray floor/gray wall/gray fireplace could be a little depressing. Is that the best way to go? That's a lot of gray, a color that can work well but can also lack warmth and lightness. A color consultant will look at your natural and artificial lighting to help you pick colors and make suggestions for furnishings.

I agree with housegal200. Changing floors, walls, fireplace and furnishings all at once can be challenging and a design consultation is worth it to make sure all those grays work together.

I went from tan fireplace surround to a marbled black. I don’t like tan tile. Something to make your fireplace a focal point.

Why does everyone want GRAY, GRAY, GRAY?? 5-years from now, I guarantee you everyone will be saying "oh, so 2020! I agree with @housegal200 regarding colors, not changing your beautiful flooring out. Definitely replace the fireplace surround with a dark tile and paint your walls a soft white. Like housegal200 idea of the wood shelves as well.

I really like housegal200's inspiration pics. I was going to suggest something similar. soft white (for all walls not just the FP), replace the shelves with wood, and redo the tile.

of the tile samples you posted above, I like #3 the best-- with the slight white veining.

shellsingh I love grey. when it comes to things that are expensive to swap out (such as tile, countertops, etc), it's sensible to keep it neutral. some people don't want white or earth tones, so grey is a great neutral choice. you can bring in color with art, accessories, etc, and obviously it's easier / less costly to swap those out whenever you feel like a change.

quick and dirty mockup. one thing: why are you replacing the flooring? what you have is really pretty. unless there's something wrong with it, I'd keep it and change many other things in this room.

ILoveMod thank you for all your ideas. I have this tile for the fireplace now(see below). The floor I have now makes noise everywhere (it wasn’t put right on the first place).

Fireplace looks very nice. Now I would close off the shelves with dry wall or take out the shelves and leave the space open.. I see it has lights but they could be turned off. With the empty space, it looks like the fireplace is more neat and tidy. Good job.

if you're putting a TV there, then close it off. but if not, then two wood shelves would look really good there!

not glass. you'll have to dust that more and also I think it's kind of an outdated look for that particular spot.
