Tumeric is a member of the ginger family and is grown the same way one does ginger root. Because you need to harvest the roots for use, I'd plant it in the ground rather than in a container.

I have some that I started from a piece of root from the store. It's gotten pretty big, and dies back during the winter months. Mine seems to do quite well in a large container, kept moist and occasionally fed with fertilizer for bulbs.

Same here. I grow it in the ground in the front of my veggie garden, along the fence. They get a few ft tall and die back in the winter and return in May. I started with a few roots from an ebay seller and they multiply every year. They like loose fertile soil. I added compost to mine. I dont water every day but in the summer it rains almost every day, most years. They like to stay drier in winter when they are dormant. Mine are in full sun.

Mine is in the ground too. Got some from a friend who has lots of it, Sort of plant you can just put in the ground and forget about, but does better in rich soil with compost.

Maybe that's why mine is doing better in its container - the ground here is fill dredged up from the bay - shelly sand, mostly, which dries out easily.

If anyone is in the Jax area, there is a big Farmer's Market on Beaver Street right next to a police substation that sells Turmeric and ginger at a reasonable price. There is an Asian vender with a pretty big setup. I've got Jackfruit and Rambutan there when in season. Also, sometimes has sugar cane, soursop, etc. The turmeric is several in a ziplock type of baggy. Weekends are the best time because thrre are more vendors. I think there is also one out on Beaches somewhere. Not sure if they have turmeric though.
