Pear slug damage. Pear slugs are sawfly larvae and midsummer is typically when you notice the damage. Damage is mostly cosmetic so no real harm done to the tree. And although the slugs can be controlled with insecticidal soap, neem oil or spinosad, by the time one notices the issue, it's likely too late to treat.
