Stainless Rangetop?

last modified: 6 years ago

SIL is replacing her gas rangetop (and yes, I've tried to convince her to go with induction, but it's just not in the cards right now). She was looking at this one: https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/CPV2366XN.html from Fisher Paykel, which has a "bare" stainless steel top instead of enamel. Would you all think this would make it easier to clean than the black enamel ones? Or worse? Or no effect?

Yes, but most have an enamel or painted coating on them, which can be a b*tch to clean cooked-on stuff from. This one does not - I'm curious if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I updated to include "bare" to clarify.

Nothing is worse than a black stove top except maybe a black car or ANY shiny black object. It will show EVERYthing and more! Been there done that. It was so bad that I had the company come out and replace the black top with a speckled white/gray stovetop. You could wipe it clean and in 5 minutes, you could see the dust that had settled on it. I don't have experience with stainless anything but it seems I've read that it streaks pretty bad??? I'd followup my cleaning routine with a water/alcohol mixture (50/50)

While I don't know if it was "bare" SS, I had a Monogram cooktop in brushed SS. I used Weiman's SS Wipes for almost all cleaning very easily, just wipe with the grain. Weiman's SS Spray Cleaner for some extra punch if something was spilled on the hot metal and stuck. Apparently I'm an exuberant stir-er lol.

Now I have a gas range with a black enamel top and it shows dirt a lot more, just like monicakm_gw says. But it too is easy to clean, just with Method all-purpose cleaner.

    my amateur experience, HTH!

I find that most closed burners are a pain to keep clean. I'd probably prefer stainless over enamel. But neither one is a great option, if cleanability is the primary concern. You'd definitely do better with induction, which is great to keep clean. But if you want to stick with gas, then I'd get one of the Bluestar open burners -- don't get the cooktop, it's only semi-open; the rangetop is awesome, though!

Instead of enamel on steel, it has cast iron grates. They are a breeze to clean with a damp towel. And big spills go into the drip pan, where they are easy to take care of. We have had one of their ranges for 10 years now, and I can't think of anything I'd rather have in a gas range.
