Cracking and checking of wood is a normal consequence of the drying process. It does not appear to be excessive in my opinion.

It appears that this is part of a porch or deck. If so, the wood should be pressure-treated wood.

Thanks to all for the responses. This is not part of a porch or deck. It is actually the floor joists (I think) for the sub-floor of the new area we are adding to the house.

They will put the glue down n the sub-floor on top of it and it will be fine, don't lose any sleep over it.

I don't like the crack in the beam in the first photo. We call those beams "dogs" around here.
