the soil is cracking.. not enough water ... getting to the root zone .... and you need some mulch ..

where are you.. big city name will also help ..

hosta are water hogs ....

in august.. dont worry about a couple ugly leaves ... stuff falls out of trees.. hail.. etc ...

I am from Moldova.

The weather was very hot. I watered them once in 2-3 days. It seems like I have forgotten to water the 'blue mouse ears' ...

I will certainly use mulch next year.

you have to water .. so that water get down into the root zone.. which may be 3 to 5 inches down ... and then the cracks will go away also ...

try not to let them go into winter dormancy too dry ... as fall comes around... it should be easier to get water down into the root zone ...

Most of us that don’t have our own compost or pines needles because we live in a city, use some type of wood mulch tho you can mulch with straw I don’t think that’s as easy as wood mulch. Here’s a photo:

Also, don’t worry about a few burned leaves at this point in the year, the angle of the sun changes, what was all shade in June is getting some sun now. I have a number of hostas that get a bit fried at this time of the year.
