Kitchen Backsplash Help

last modified: 6 years ago

I have another thread on here but started a new one as it’s specific to backsplash. I want to do something a little more unique than your standard brick design so either the bigger tile (2x12) or herringbone pattern is what I an considering. I have also seen some designs that utilize tiles with a shiny and matte finish to give a little different look. There are a few sheets of smaller herringbone backsplash that I liked due to the color variation which I am also considering. My main goal with this post is to narrow down the tile size and material and then I can start looking into color options. I want to make sure I have a cohesive look with all materials. No plans at the moment to change or paint the cabinets except possibly extend to the ceiling. I included some photos at the bottom of this post.

Two questions, 1) is there an optimum size tile for doing herringbone and 2) I’m really stuck on what tile material. I like the look of glass but worry about glare because my kitchen is quite sunny

backsplash height is about 16”.

Photo of current kitchen

Countertop undecided but most likely a warmer white quartz with some warm grey/brown veining. Something like photo below, but more similar to the one on the left.

Below are some backsplash photos I found on Houzz and liked.

Lastly, some photos I took of various options at the tile store earlier this week.

I would choose the counter before the backsplash. Simple is best due to the pattern/grain in the cabinets.

@chloebud That is exactly what I plan to do, but as I mentioned in my post I want to narrow down a tile size and material. I know the general pattern I want, but there are way too many options right now.

Suggestions on tile size and material would be most helpful for me at this time. From there is will only be selecting a color to complement the overall look.

Herringbone is a lovely pattern. However, as mentioned by chloebud, get the countertop INSTALLED before choosing the backsplash. It all looks very different once it’s in your home. To do a herringbone: The length of the tiles you choose depends on the distance between the countertop and bottom cabinet. When you choose one too small, it gets way too busy.

Thanks both. Ultimately I’m trying to get an idea on size and material as it will affect the installation cost. I have a guy coming by on Friday to give me an estimate. I was also advised by the company doing my countertops to wait to pick a final backsplash for the reasons stated - it could look very different once the counter is installed.

Total height of the backsplash will be about 16”.

Finally ready to move forward with my backsplash I’m about 99% sure I want to go with herringbone. I want more of an elongated tile and have 2 size options. Does the bigger tile look too big? Once I decide on the size I will finalize the color. Not a fan of the beige color because it looks too yellow to me.

If I had to choose I’d pick the bigger one and you’re right, the small one looks yellow!

My OCD ness had to lay out the smaller tile..... I think I might like the smaller better.

    I like the smaller one

The beige one does look yellow against the white but the white also looks very stark against your cabs and counter... is there an in between? Or can you layout the beige on its own and not beside the white?

@Trem Wills My intention was to pick a size and then pick a color. However, I may need to pick a color first and then let the size be dictated that way. Planning to go back to the tile store this week but was hoping to have some type of direction to go in for size. I do agree that I want an off-white that isn’t too yellow looking. My sink is an off-white (pic below). I had also considered a darker color but can’t find a light warm brown tile.

This is another alternative but not this color.

I thought for sure the countertop was my biggest struggle. Leaning towards the 2x6 size for herringbone. Can anyone help advise on color? I am afraid some of the cream options I had previously look a bit too yellow as well as 1 below in the first photo. I can either go with a plain white (far left) and warm it up with grout color or I picked out several other options from Sonoma Tile. Lighting is 3000k, I tried 4000k and I don’t like how it looks with the warmer tones I have going on. So this is representative of the lighting I will have less undercabinet.
