Workstation sink - 28 inch?

I’m putting a 28” single bowl into my new kitchen (it will be the only sink). At that size is it worth doing the workstation style? it will be located immediately adjacent to my peninsula/prep space.

IMO they are a PITA the cutting boards are too small all the stuff now needs to be stored somehere so that has to be planned the racks in the bottom get dirty and need washing so you have to wash them then the sink , sorry IMO a nice good quality single bowl stainless undermount sink is perfect.Save tons of money and get a good set of cutting boards

That's a small sink -- are you working with a very small kitchen?

If you can get a bigger sink, do it. It's the most-used item in your whole kitchen. It's worth giving up something else to get the bigger sink.

If you're working with a tiny space, yes, go with a workspace sink -- in a small space, every item needs to be a work horse.

Is the 28" the exterior dimension or the interior dimension?

I agree with Patricia Colwell. I'd rather have a separate full-size cutting board and a separate colander. I don't know of any other workstation "accessories" that are worthwhile. With a 28" sink in a workstation style, so much of it will be covered by the cutting board or colander that you won't have much access to the sink. I go to my sink a hundred times a day, and don't want to have to push things aside, or feel cramped to put my dishes or pots and pans in there. I'd rather have my sink free, accessible and unencumbered.

28” is just fine size wise BTW

my kitchen isn’t small and isn’t big - g shape 13x12. I am happy with the size, it’s proportional to the kitchen.

Thanks Patricia- the things you brought up were my concerns. I’ll skip it.

Also to add, I have more than enough prep counter space so I don’t *need* my sink to be extra prep space.

This is the sink I’ve purchased and was mulling over returning to get a workstation style

One thing to consider is an offset drain sink, in case you wanted to put trash cans under the sink.

Can you tell us what is your sink base cabinet size? Perhaps you can get a couple inches bigger for a sink.

I agree with cyc2001's comment. Here is a link to an offset-drain sink in a similar size. A offset corner drain not only gives you more space under the sink because the drain plumbing isn't right in the middle, but also gives you more usable sink space where you can soak a big pan without covering the drain.

My sink base is 30”. 28.5” interior. the size of my sink isn’t changing.

trash will be in a pullout beside the sink.

Once you go corner drain, you never go back to center drain again. A sink with a corner drain is what I have, and given my experience with it, would not choose anything else. When I got my sink, a corner drain was much more rare. Now Blanco and Elkay are making them because more people are asking for them.

I had looked for an off center drain but couldnt find one in a 28” single bowl.

eta: that isn’t triple the price, that is.

Isnt that a link to one 3 posts up^^^? Seems to be 1” smaller in width, and same front-to-back. 🤔

It is, but I’d rather have the extra inch.

"As Joe Corlett always says on here a 30" sink can fit in a 30" base so you might be able to go bigger."

Ima put a 33" sink into a 30" cabinet next week.

I initially bought the same sink as yours in 27", but decided to return and purchase the 27" workstation https://www.kraususa.com/kraus-kwu110-27-workstation-27-undermount-16-gauge-stainless-steel-single-bowl-kitchen-sink.html. No regrets whatsoever. I had a double bowl sink prior to the remodel, so the 27" single bowl felt huge. The drying rack is my favorite accessory. We keep it out all the time and use it regularly. When I need the cutting board, I'll just swap the two. The cutting board is not any smaller than my other boards. If we ever move, I'm going to have such a hard time going back to a regular sink.

I have your size, single bowl, sink. Despite all the input above, I love it. I'm so glad I didn't get a bigger one.

I'm not sure what a "workstation style" sink means, The small sink cabinet that goes with my small sink allowed me room for a tray slot-cabinet. I keep my cutting boards in there (and a folding step stool), and bring them out as needed. What a luxury to have a slot cupboard like this!

I keep a plastic dishtub in the sink that takes up about half of it, so I still have a place where I can drain off vegetable water or use a colander. (I have a small colander.)

All in all, I use bits and pieces—chopping boards, etc.—and don't have a service area on top of the sink. It would cramp my style to have one of those, I think, because a top would constantly be in the way.

    A few minutes later....

Gosh, now I've looked at the link upthread with a "workstation style" kitchen sink. Sorry, but that would drive me batty. I'd have to find somewhere to store all those bits and pieces! Then, I'd have to give a thought as to which piece I would use when I wanted to throw something together for dinner. And then I'd have to clean it spiffily so it wouldn't crud up whatever else it gets stored with. Waaaaaay too much hassle for me.

Wilson853, what brand / style workstation sink do you have? I’m seeing that there aren’t too many with an offset drain.

@cyc2001, It is the 30" Highpoint zero radius, purchased from Overstock quite a while ago. It doesn't have an offset drain which hasn't been a problem for us. At the time it was one of the few that I could find with two ledges as I wanted to be able to stack the colander and board to the side. I replaced the heavy colander with a $10 expandable one that fits either ledge.

Don't really understand the reasoning of having to store the things that come with the sink. The board and colander discreetly sit in the sink ready to be used. If you don't want to keep them in the sink just put them away as you typically do.

We have a 26" single bowl sink with a ledge that is incredibly useful. (26" side to side, 18" front to back with 1/2" ledge, so the actual sink area is 17".) This is our cleanup sink - we'll have another larger workstation sink once all is said and done. We're doing our kitchen in stages, so while the prep side is under construction, we're using the cleanup sink as our entire kitchen area. On big holidays when there are a bunch of us in the kitchen, this can function as a second prep area.

This is a custom stainless countertop with integrated sink, but just so you can see the utility of it:

26" is big enough that we can fit two sheet pans side by side, effectively extending our counter space when we're prepping here.

I plan to get custom cut cutting boards that will fit onto the ledge, too. The metal flexible rail thing was on amazon - they come in tons of sizes.

My SS apron sink is not a ledge sink, but I left a positive reveal on the back, to allow me to place a cutting board or sheet pan over the sink. I already owned cutting boards and sheets pans which fit perfectly--much less expensive than an actual workstation sink. Colanders which expand to fit are easily available.

Everyone works differently in their kitchen. When I see Wilson853's and Emilymch's pics I know that would make me quite uncomfortable to have that in my sink. For my personality, the board and colander do not "discreetly sit in the sink". I agree with Tangerinedoor's last paragraph above. But Wilson853 and Emilymch love it, as do others, while others feel the way I do. The OP needs to decide which type of personality she is that would love the workstation arrangement or hate it.

There's another post that I started on a very much related topic. Something like, Is Anyone Sorry they put in a WS sink. Mine would have been 30-33 inches and an only sink. There are comments there, especially very recently, that may be helpful.

@Amber S what did you end up with? I recently bought an elkay workstation sink that I believe is 28" and I love the accessories but we are contemplating going up in size. my mom has a regular sink and keeps a big cutting board next to it and we've been using it the past two weeks and i actually love it... i just throw food into the sink when done and then i can use the cutting board for whatever. it's actually big and pretty enough you can leave it out permanently. just another idea if you didn't go workstation or if you're not yet installed and still contemplating.
