115 Year Old Asbestos "Slate" Roof

last modified: 6 years ago

Does anyone here have any experience with old asbestos "slate" roofs? DH and I are considering making an offer on a 115 year old Dutch Colonial which has the original asbestos slate roof. Of course the realtor has stated that "this stuff lasts forever" (sure it does) and I have not been able to find much out re longevity etc. The home has had some original "slate" replaced with actual real slate due to some cracking. My gut is telling me that after 115 years in a Michigan climate this roof is on borrowed time. My concerns run to the added expense of dealing with asbestos materials.

Thanks for any input!
