Help! I think our Final Kitchen Design Falling Flat!

last modified: 4 years ago

Hello Houzz,

We have been working on our kitchen design for a few months and have finally gotten to a layout we like. We showed it to a friend and she was not as excited as we would expect. We are worried we may have gotten tunnel vision and aren't seeing the inherit flaws in this design. Would love any and all feedback from fresh eyes.

A few minor notes, because our cabinet design company can't reflect it in the design and the rendering is not great:

1. The big door in the left corner is actually a French door that allows lots of light into the home

2. Refrigerator will be a 48" stainless steel built-in with columns

3. Range is a 36" Dual Fuel range

4. Dishwasher, trash and a small beverage center are in the island

Here are the dimensions if helpful:

I would not go with clear glass pendants here.

    1. they will give you no working light

    2. they will be glary if the bulb is bright

    3. clear glass is hard to keep clean

    4. those bulbs are going to cast a yellow glow on the white room

    where are the sconces going?

@RL Relocation LLC there are so many gems in your post! Thank you! THANK YOU! Thank YOU!!!

Excuse the mess since I'm in the midst of a Reno but here is a picture of my current dining room. The scones will go where the black circles are on the back wall (6ft apart, I believe 63" high):

Also, I leaning towards the Zellige Snow White tile for backsplash...

During my search for backsplash tile for my all white kitchen, interestingly enough, this picture of herringbone tile and one of the pendant lights that you pictured (not the color of the pendants) sparked my interest.

@RL Relocation LLC, do you think the chandelier and pendant lights should have the same light shade covers? If so, I would love to know if you think that this chandelier matches the 3-tone pendants that you recommended? If not, I will keep the chandelier that I already own (FYI; it's still refundable).

    Awe well thank you:

    1. do not pick the sconces until you have a more complete picture of what you are going to hang between them, that will greatly play into the size, and shape they should be.

    2. No I do not think they need the same glass and I love your first choice for the dining table.

I actually think the contrast would be nice, Adding some black to the metal of your pendants would be what ties them together

@RL Relocation LLC, I love it!!! By chance, do you know where I can find the pendants that you have pictured? I found these the 3 below and would love to know your thoughts. FYI, my island is 11ft long but the 7" pendant seems to small and the 14" pendant feels too big. I would love to know your thoughts. I previously purchased 3- 10" island pendants.

    The found this one on Houzz is W 7" / D 7" / H 10" and cost $154.

Also, I found this one on Houzz but it is not tri-toned and it seems a little too big. The measurements are W 14" / D 14" / H 14" and costs $230.

    Lastly, I found this one on Houzz that is tri-toned and the measurements are W 14" / D 19.3" / H 14" and it costs $440.

The ones I found where from Home Depo I think its the first one you posted. I see no need to spend 440for the same OA look The second ones would work too!

Here is a thought so we can both see ... take a piece of cardboard and cut one out in each size then add some string and tack it up there. I think 14 is too big as well, maybe the 1st one comes in 2 sizes?

Can you flip flop the fridge and wall ovens? You are most likely going to need access to the fridge a lot more often. Also ... will you need more oven space or storage space? You may not need the wall oven, mYbe a few times a year? Finally ... the gray painted ... you might consider a washed wood finish in gray or even white or a light wood finish.

Kristy. They have just barely installed the kitchen, so I don't think they are looking to move things around any time soon. They are brand new cabinets.

DIFFERENT QUESTION, I bought snow while zellige tile for this kitchen but now I’m 2nd guessing my choice. I like the zellige tile because of its color variety. Im 2nd guessing it because it’s so rough around the edges so I’m wondering if it’s appropriate for my mcm/contemporary space?

Here are some of my design inspiration pics:

this is the zellige tile looks like in my home uninstalled.

alternatively, I could buy the bedrosians cloe tile that has the color variety without the character along the edges.

    So, I have 2 questions:

    1. would you mind prefer the zellige tile or the bedrosian tile?

    2. Should I stop the tile at the edge of the counter or tile to the door trim. To note, I waterfalled the edge of this cabinet.

I think having a little "earthyness" is a good thing I would see it through, plus if you ever transition styles this will work with most anything.

@RL Relocation LLC I finally finished my homework!!! Excuse the delay. It took me a while to find art supplies and I had to find a time that construction workers weren’t dominated the space so I could execute your brilliant recommendation. I have a much better understanding of how the pendants will work in my space, all thanks to you!!

also to note, I only have 8ft ceilings and all pendants are currently 30” from the top of the counter top. I had hoped for 36’’ but I don’t the space.

As requested, here are 7” pendants, 24 inches a part on center.

here are 10” pendant, 24” a part on edge.

here are 14” pendants, 24” apart on edge.

here are 2 22” oversized pendants, 22” Apart at the bottom and 45 inches from the left and right of the edges of the island. Using an equation that i found online, I got to this number b/c my island is 4ft wide x 11.4ft long so I took 1/4 of each of those measurements (1ft and 2.7ft) and added them together (12+31), divided that number by 2 and got 21.5”... I think this is the max width for a pendant for my exact size island.

If you were to go with the 7" pendants, I would go with 4 24" apart, then split the difference for the amount in from the ends. I don't think it would be enough light with only three.

    Thanks, @Nancy Walton!!!

Unfortunately, I only ran 3 wires here before I dry walled the house so I’m stuck with 3 or less pendants. 🙃

    1. can we change the spacing?

I like the second size if this is the placement

I like the 3rd size if we can space them out more.

@RL Relocation LLC i can put 3 pendants (of any size) in this kitchen anywhere that you like! I just chose these spaces to five us a visual point for a conversation.😇

@RL Relocation LLC how would you position the 3 larger pendant? there are no recessed lights on the left or right of the island so we will need pendant coverage for lighting on the island.

@RL Relocation LLC pardon my confusion.

Is the last picture you posted of a 14” pendant with more space than the previous pendants (that were 10”s)?

Yes I think you have them too tight together, if you can play with the spacing. It was also to show what something with less "metal" will look like.

Those are great mock ups. I would only warn you that clear glass pendants, while a great choice to help add more light, is a pain to keep clean. I have two in my master bathroom, and they lit up the place like it was a new space. Just hate that they get dusty so quickly in that room. A kitchen offers WAY more dirt options.

@RL Relocation LLC, just wondering, why did you select the white coned pendant over the black one? I found real pictures of both options and would love to know your thoughts.

    last modified: 4 years ago

@RL Relocation LLC, your computer generated picture of this pendant looks much different than my cutout of it.

this is the 24”pendant, which I thought would be better for my 11ft island. Please let me know if you envisioned 2 18” pendants instead. this is 24” pendant, hung 26 from the top of the 8ft ceiling, with 33” gap between the island and the bottom of the pendant.

I just realized that I made a mistake in my 24” prototype. the rejuvenation website says that the height of the shade is only 16” i have shade being 24” here. I will redo my prototype shortly. 🙄

Paint the cutouts white on one side and black on the other after you get the scale right, might help you to pick. I went white because I think a bit of blending is not bad, i worry black might be too much?

riddle me this where is the electrical?

Can you tell me the color of your cabinets and what countertop you have. Thank You!

If you have any empty wall, paint it a pleasing color....and use color for accent pieces, chair upholstery, kitchen towels, serving pieces, a window treatment, a runner rug in front of the sink and another runner rug in your primary prep zone. Your kitchen is only falling “flat” due to the lack of color. Don’t forget to add some art or even a pretty wall calendar.

@RL Relocation LLC, your wish is my command. Please see the pictures above. Also, the electricity is inside of the walls until I decide on pendant location and size. I tucked 3 wires away.

@Becky H, my quartz counters are just white by design stone. My cabinets are a custom color, here’s the paint color combo that my cabinet company gave to me. I painted my walls pure white by sherwin Williams because I thought it was the closest match and it doesn't pull blue, pink, etc. best wishes!

@felizlady thanks for your suggestions. I’ll implement upon move-in.

So many great suggestions! when using a monochrome palate, texture is key. You also will have so many opportunities for texture and color elsewhere. As people have ready said, bar stools with color or wood or wicker or all, plants, art, rugs, add a wood beam wrap where your pendants hang. just figure it out slowly. it is a beautiful space!

If you’re asking for a vote on the pendant color, the white looks better to me. I like contrast as much as anyone but somehow the white pendant complements your overall design better (to my eye). I love that shape.

I agree the white is better. I am a little nervous about the size looking stuck to the ceiling ish... does this come one size smaller? what do you think, when I scroll back up the circle shape it starts to feel like a better size? but sometimes being there really makes the difference.

@RL Relocation LLC poey! I bought yesterday and it’s non-refunable. I bought black 24” wide. There was a 18” option— in black and white. Do you think it will look horrible? My island is 11ft long.

If so, please respond ASAP so i can beg the folks at rejuvenation to let me change it (since i only bought it yesterday). 🥴

@RL Relocation LLC, here are some pics of the 18” and the specs.

I used balloons to check the size as well as distance above the island. Paint them the color you are interested in.

IMO. If you can only have 2, go big.

@Heather Whiteman, thanks for your input. I think the 24" pendant will work. They will be 33" above the counter. My husband is 6" and he can see past them without them being in his visual site. It's really hard for me to see the white pendants in my home since the kitchen is already so white-- pure white paint, white shaker cabinets, just white quartz, white grout. Without living in the home and adding texture or colored accents, I think adding more white anything would remind me of an insane asylum.

i think the black will be spectacular! good job!

Are they exchangeable, non refundable is kinda a joke lol. will you get a restock? BC I would have ordered one of each and then compared. 24 inch is huge, and the reason I am concerned is not the size of the island but the height of the ceiling.

Rfharmon -- quick question. Have you started using the island for seating? Have you found the pulls on the doors under the overhang are "knee bangers"? How deep is your seating overhang from door to edge? How deep are the pulls on the doors?

@Buehl I have not sat at this island yet. There is only 12” overhang. My cabinet installers put the handles all the way at the top to avoid some knee banging... I hope that works!

@RL Relocation LLC they are nonrefundable because they are custom cut for length. 🥴

    1. Call rennovation and speak to them. 2. The rod can be cut by an electrician.
