I'm not sure if I should get a 6 or 9" hood. I like this look -

Definitely 9" will provide better capture than 6". Get the deepest, tallest hood you can fit. Ideally, a 36" wide hood goes over a 30" range (3" extra on each side), and as close to 24" deep as you can get. (When we did ours, 22" deep was as close as I could find.)

Please clarify. Is your range 30” wide, but your cabinet above it is 24” wide? Or are both 24” wide? Or was the 24” referring to something else?

Range and cabinet are both 30" wide -- height of cabinet is 24" -

Just seeing this thread...may I ask which range hood you ultimately picked, and how you like it? Thanks.

I chose about a 7" hood in order to accomodate a mosaic I purchased that was going to be installed, but I returned the mosaic and now wish I had a larger hood. I prefer the chunkier/more substantial look.

Which model hood did you buy? I'm trying to decide between the Victory 30" Heavy Duty Under-Cabinet Hood "PS17", which is 7" high, and the Broan Elite ALTA430SS, which is only 5" high.

Note that at least one of the above hoods is installed many inches higher than the manufacturer's recommended maximum height above the range. This reduces capture. Looks aren't everything.
