Just cut the excess off if you have a friend with a table saw it will take 5 miin or less/ abit of sanding on the cut edge and done.

I wanted to do that but it's not solid wood so not sure if that will be a problem. Also length of 98" and I would have to take approximately and 8-9" piece off the back. I would sand it but doesn't have to be perfect as it will be flush against wall.

Lucky for you they're not solid wood, they're veneered now - and you can cut solid wood countertops with a table saw, just have the right blade. Also, it probably needs to be scribed to fit flush against the wall anyway - walls have subtle variations you don't see until you try to mount something long and square against them. So, find a handy friend and trim away.

Do you want the top to be narrower because the base is narrow, or because you don't have enough space in the room for a 25" desk?

I would not enjoy working on a desk less than 25" deep - especially if you have a computer monitor on the desk. How about if you pull the bases out from the wall, so the fronts are appropriate for your 25" top? Then you maintain a reasonable work surface, and don't have to cut anything.

Per AnnKH's post above, when I did an ikea hack desk, I used kitchen base cabinets and cut them down by 6" in height, which is what picture looks like.

You can also, if you have the room, pull the base cabinets away from the wall, use the 25" countertop pulled to the front of the cabinets. Leaves a gap in the rear, but not visible.

I'm intrigued. Can you tell me how you cut down a base cabinet 6" without losing structural integrity? And, what type of base was it--doors, drawers?

Have you ever assembled Ikea cabinets? (Actually, my desk was from the old cabinets, based on 6" drawers. The new cabinets would be 5" .) All drawers.

Yes. We have assembled many IKEA pieces but not base kitchen cabinets. My assumption is that you cut it off at the top eliminating the top drawer. Is that right?

I could do these cabinets instead which are very similar to the Besta units but 24" deep instead of 15". Get two and then put countertop already bought on top with 24" in the middle for desk space. I really wanted a floating shelf look. Thoughts? https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/sektion-top-cab-f-fridge-freezer-w-2-doors-white-ringhult-white-s69381021/
