Bland bedroom needs help

My guest bedroom needs help! I’m staying in it now while my master bedroom & bathroom is remodeled, which is making me see just how bland it is.

This room has been the repository for all of our cast off furniture & decor. The only thing purchased for this room specifically was the bedspread and pillows, which I like.

This part of the house was an addition, so it has the only baseboard heat in my house, which limits furniture placement. It also has a funky angle and a really high sloped ceiling.

Any ideas?

Why would baseboard heat interfere with furniture placement? I live in New England and have baseboard heat throughout my home. Furniture goes right up against it.

I've never had baseboard heat and was told you had to keep furniture, draperies, etc. away from it. Good to know. Assuming you were just pointing this out and not necessarily recommending I move something under the window?

Yes, I was just pointing out the fact that I have beds, dressers, long draperies, sofas, etc in front of baseboard heat with zero issues in case you wanted to rearrange the furniture.

The heat depends on wheter it is hot water or electric. As for the bedroom too many little pics and decor everywhere , the bedding is not inviting at all it just looks sloppy you need 2 night table and much larger lamps. a guest room needs very little storage , a nice folding suitcase rack in the closet set up at the end of the bed before guests arrive, I like mor etailored bedding to make the bed look well made . The pillows work but way too many of them and if that is a duvet and you want to keep it it needs to be much larger to cover the box spring for sure and Ideally the side rails.I just reread and that for sure is electric heat so nothing combustable near it.I like drapes but roman shades would be the best choice for that window.

Center the dresser. I don't like the bed angled against the wall, can you put the bed on the wall facing the t.v.? Use the small cabinet as nght stand or get a new night stand and add a lamp,or get wall mounted light. I don't care for all the random wall decor, maybe pick a couple pics you like. I like the pink flower pic placed above the bed. Add some real plants. a serene room is always best for a guest room.

Start with new bedding. And think "bold," if you want to liven it up. Chances are, what you think might be too bold won't be too much. Small rooms can benefit from a bit of drama, and this one already has some drama with that angled wall. Look at large-scale prints, high contrast, and/or bright colors.

Then look for much larger pieces of artwork and hang them centered over furniture. The little wreath, floral prints, etc., are too saccharine sweet and uninteresting, and hung in odd places. Nothing wrong with florals or still life but better if they have vibrant colors and something compelling to look at.

This room has lots of potential! Overall, what is your design style throughout the house?

Our design style is best described as Cape Cod meets Coastal Modern. Lots of crisp white & light gray with warm woods & aqua accents.

The 2 longest walls are both angled, so there is no wall directly facing the tv. I love symmetry so it drives me a bit crazy. We tried the bed on the wall facing the window and didn’t like it.

We normally have a chair next to the dresser that my high school daughter commandeered for her digital classroom but here’s a photo of what it normally looks like.

Totally agree about the artwork. These are all of the random extra pieces that I didn’t want anywhere else. Given the sloped ceiling & angled walls, I struggle with what to put on the long wall. A huge piece? Should I leave it blank?

I know I need a bigger lamp, but that means buying a bigger nightstand I think. Both are cast off‘s from my daughter’s childhood bedroom and it shows.

I hate the bedframe but replacing it would be such a hassle. Can I get a big king bedspread and cover it up the footboard?

Patricia is right about baseboard heating. We had hot water baseboard heat and was no problem putting furniture/drapes in front of it...We now have electric baseboard heating and all furniture put in front of it gets so hot. Luckily the baseboard heating is just in the family room. As for your bedroom...I love the colors in the picture over your bed...could you bring more of those colors into your room with bedding, pillows and other things? I don't think you want to cover the footboard with a king size spread....won't look right and a real toe stubber when you walk around the end of the bed,

Is it possible to place the head of the bed along the wall that presently has the tall skinny white stand? I don't think your present flooring does much for the room. A large jute rug under the lower 3/4 of the bed and extending along the walkways on the sides of the bed might help soften the look. Can you paint the bed white? And I agree completely that you need new bedding. At first glance I thought your comforter was just a sheet. As a guest, I always appreciate a comfortable reading chair, one with arms. I think the tall skinny white stand isn't serving any purpose in the guest room as it as it's full of your stuff. Replace it with a folding luggage rack, as previously suggested. I think you taught us all that we should spend some time living in our guest room to learn what works and what needs fixing.

Dynamic bedding, new color on the walls, remove artwork, add a round mirror with fun frame behind bed. This will be a great start... Just needs some punch. Anthropologie home might give you some inspo.

The wall that the white shelf is on it is only 4 feet wide so the bed won’t fit on it. The room has 6 walls!

The white cabinet is usually empty – our stuff is in it now because we’re living in the room! Is the objection to the piece specifically or just that it was full? The cabinet is a holdover from the bathroom at our old house and I just threw it in here to give my mom some storage space when she stays.

I’m personally not a fan of rugs on carpet but I see your point. I think I’ll start with a new quilt, new lighting and a couple of bigger art pieces. Love the idea of luggage rack. A bed skirt would help....

With all the white trim and furniture, you just need a beautiful color on your walls. Choose whatever appeals to you and flows with the rest of your house. I could see blue, green, or pink working well in your space. You can go very pale or more dramatic with the color.

The room color doesn't photograph well in large part because of the horrible lighting - I actually really like it. I think the problem is the bland bedding & crappy lighting. I know I need a new floor lamp, so that might be next.

I've been online for the past hour looking for colorful bedspreads. I actually love color so I'm excited. I also ordered a basic tailored white bedskirt to hold me over in the interim.

Thanks everyone! Whoever made the comment about us all needing to spend a night in their guest room isn't wrong. We didn't realize just how awful the mattress we had in there was until we slept in it. My poor mom....

Try moving the white chest of drawers to be centered in the space it presently occupies. Can you shift the bed's position to have the headboard against the wall with the "starburst" piece? I'd change out the starburst and the other wall art to a larger work of art over the headboard, if vertical space permits. The room needs a wall mirror, either behind and above the white chest of drawers, or to the right of the window (mirrors directly across from windows tend to "wash out", rather than bounce light). Change out the bedding to be a focal point of the room-something brighter, more upscale hotel style.

I was going to suggest painting the bedframe white, and now I see someone has beat me to it! Great minds, as they say...

The repurposed bathroom cabinet looks exactly like a bathroom cabinet. It's very out of place. The dresser works (or, will work once it's centered on it's wall), maybe you can find something similar in a side table/nightstand. Is there room for a chair?
