planting thru the end of october .. should be fine.. besides.. better odds of over wintering in mother earth ... than in pots if you dont have experience with that ...

if you water it in deeply at planting ... odds are ... with damn cold nights ... you may not have to water again.. until mid to late may ... when temps strat drying soil at depth .... meanwhile the roots will settle in ....

do you have that famous OH clay .. and if so.. do you know how to deal with it ..???

the only thing i might wonder about.. is if you can get good stock.. this time of year ... or has the stuff been sitting around all summer ...

and if you dont know where adrian MI is.. im 20 miles up the road from you ... toward ann arbor.. if you ever heard of it.. lol ...

Thanks Ken. Yeah I've been to the Adrian area a few times. Just a quick drive. I know I can always get some good feedback from you because we have the same climate. lol.

We are lucky in that we have pretty good sandy soil. I will probably head to the North Branch Nursery in Pemberville, if you've heard of it, this weekend and look a bit.

I have an open area along the back fence line (140 feet from the house) between sets of arborvitae that I'd like to fill. Similar areas back there are filled with limelight hydrangeas and incrediball hydrangeas. possible looking at a lilac to keep pruned to about 10 feet or so or a korean spice viburnum. One drawback is the fragrance wouldn't be near the house.

why in the world would you need to prune a lilac for height.. 140 feet from the house???

please dont tell me you are planting a few feet from some property line way out there ... if so.. just plant 10 feet in.. and never prune again ...

You got me Ken. It's the area to the left in front of the old/new fencing between the arborvitae. Everything back there is planted about 8-10 feet from the fence as there is an easement for electrical I believe. Area is about 10 feet wide.
