AUTUMN CONTAINER PLANTING

Autumn is often the season for tired containers. If you planted in the Spring, you’re very lucky if they are continuing to look great! If most of the plants are continuing to do their thing, fill out your containers with seasonal color or twisting branches for lasting interest. Be sure to include subtle and dark tones in addition to your Fall colors. This makes the bright colors pop and give your containers a more natural feel. For a twist on seasonal color, add a splash of lime or burgundy for an elegant transition into Autumn. Did you redo your pots for the season? We’d love to see what you designed.

Very pretty, and good advice for pots. There is a talent to putting together an attractive mixed pot.

Yesterday i I chucked two outdoor pots, one geranium which looked sad all summer and a schefflera with scale. Good riddance,

The sweet potato vine shown in the photo does not seem a very wise choice for a fall container. It is frost sensitive and will start to decline in temps below 50F.

Except for a few seasonal/annual color accents, I prefer my container plantings be a selection of small shrubs and hardy perennials or grasses that will withstand the vagaries of all seasons' weather.

@gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) You know what, you're right! We have had them go through the winter (with leaves on) in San Francisco, but inland is pushing it. It's a nice look for a couple months, and then would require replacing. To get through the winter, a gold-variegated ivy would be a longer-lasting option for this container.

Speaking of shrubs, Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Butterball' (a dwarf Hinoki Cypress) would be a great all-season plant in this color scheme... Next time...
